I have never taken an Eggbeater apart but a few things could cause the axle and bearing to feel stiff. I also don't know whether it has cup and cone bearings, cartridge bearings or a plain bushing.

Also, you do not describe what it feels like when it rotates - stiff but smooth? Stiff and rough?

1) The bearing preload is too high. Reduce the preload, either by backing off on the cup-and-cone or on the cartridge bearing's side loading mechanism.

2) The seals are damaged and interfere with the smooth operation.

3) A ball or race is damaged.

4) The pedal's shell is deformed and is squashing the axle. This is quite common when someone doesn't have the correct tool and squashes the shell or collar in a vice. Even reputable bike shops do this.

Hi Greg

the first thing that comes to mind is that perhaps  you have bent the axle.

or perhaps the spring has moved slightly and is now rubbing against the body of the pedal

I had egg-beaters and found that the "seal" over the shim at the crank end oftern is stiff, not the bearing at the open end.

check and grease that sucker and it might help.

You can buy a service kit for Eggbeater peddles that is quite inexpensive, it comes with a replacement bearing and seals and bushes + grease I think.

I just took mine apart and cleaned and greased with the teflon pink grease, reassembled and it works 100%.
