local bike shop took a look at my bike and said that the front shock needed to be connected to the frame with a sealed bearing. they installed the sealed bearing. after about 200km of riding my entire shock is loose and the bearing is shattered. does anybody know why this happened? going to take the bike back but need to know what went wrong.

The only connection where a fork and a frame meets is at the headset. So they replaced it with a sealed bearing unit. It should not last only 200km. Take it back and see what they say.

Yup, I would look for a new favourite LBS. They either installed a really cheap and nasty set, an incorrect set, or they over tightened the assembly (not likely, you would normally destroy the top washer that the center bolt goes through, before being able to stress the bearings).

If I may ask how much did the new bearings set you back, based on cost a quick assessment can be made on the percieved quality.

Was it a genuine sealed bearing, or are the bearings exposed?

It sounds to me like Mampara's interpretation of what you actually mean could be right.

However, it'll help us to help you if you use the right terminology.

Let's start with "Shattered". What do you really mean?

By "shock" do you mean fork?

By "sealed bearing" do you mean cartridge bearing?

I won't hold my breath on getting an answer from the bike shop as to what went wrong. The way bearings work is pretty obscure to most bike shops and mechanics, them not even being able to distinguish between a cartridge and sealed bearing.

I guess you have a internal type heaset in your frame.

These use angularcontact sealed cartridge bearings.

If they did not preload the bearing correctly then it will break since any vertical movement on the bearing will result in pitting and nice chiunks of metal inside.

Find a new bike Shop. I recommend Mikes Bike in Northcliff. I had fantastic experience there.

But...but...but you're in the Cape?

Northcliff is around the corner from me. Why didn't you come and visit me? I make better coffee than any bike shop.

Well if i knew that I would have popped in but as it turns out I was in a hell of a rush after the baggage handlers/SAA somehow managed to smash the front brake lever of my Hope Mono Mini Pro. The distributor sent the parts to Mikes cos it's across the street. What a gem of a shop and excellent service.

Next time I'm up I'll pop in and say hi. I hope you have good coffee..

Guys, this is about a bearing, not coffee. Let's not hijack this.

But, erm, I'm curious. Johann, how do you make your coffee. Obviously not the instant stuff. Do you use the glass thingy with the filter plunger, or coffee beans or ground, and which brand? Do you ever use the the little aluminium Italian espresso makers? You don't use a machine, do you?

We may as well hijack this since the OP ran away and doesn't want to answer our questions. Lets have some coffee 'till he comes back.

I have one of those bean-to-cup machines that grinds, tamps brews and ejects the coffee.

However, the quality of the beans make a huge difference to taste and at presence I can't find decent beans at a decent price. Any suggestions anyone? Please don't suggest Illy, Saeco, Caturra,  Pick 'n  Pay or Checkers. I am an unashamed coffee snob. I'll put any old chain on my bike but don't give me rubbish beans.

have you checked out www.coffee.co.za? i order through them regularly. also some fruit and veg city stores have great coffee beans for sale. i prefer to hand-grind (ok, i don't have an inbuilt grinder on my breville), but then you have complete control over how fine the grains are.

I suggest a ride at Clearwater Trail. A section of the trail runs through a coffee plantation which serves a brilliant post ride breakfast with a range of coffees to taste and buy.Thumbs%20Up
