you might get some "style aware" roadies who would look down on you if you wear mtb shoes on a road race...

but then when you kick their butts, it feels alot better! Wink

MTB shoes look crap on a road bike but other than that if the soles are as stiff on your mtb shoes as the road shoes that you want to buy then i dont think there is any difference

I rode with mtb shoes on a roadbike and really there is nothing wrong with doing it,, in the end it does the same thing.

but I must also add...

I bought road shoes when I bought my "new" roadbike and I personally feel that the road shoes are more comfortable on the roadbike than the

mtb shoes,,

but I think your pedals and everything plays a role here?

if you have the money, get some road shoes, you dont have to spend 1000's of $$$ on them either..

Shoes and pedals will be heavier than road, but if you want to go unnoticed - just get some shoe covers and no-one will know!

depends on the level you're riding on..

heavier pedals will obviously make the bike heavier,, but if you're not seriously into racing you wont know the difference.

just check on the road pedals, they have different "settings" that keep your foot 'locked' into position (like tightening your mtb pedals alot)

and the clips that you put on your shoes, also allow different amounts of play.. the guy at your lbs should be able to help you with this.

some people get knee pain if their feet are locked into position, and dont have a small amount of movement.

as for the shoes,, you can go all out and get a pair with carbon soles and the works, but if you are not pushing for seconds of you're time you wont notice it.. just ensure that the soles are nice and stiff and dont flex too much.
