umm whats a through axel ?

Normal quick release has a slot at the bottom of the fork for the wheel and quick release to "drop" out of when removing. A through axle slides in from the side. The fork is enclosed and has a "hole" in it for the skewer to slide into' date=' through the hub and lock on the opposit fork stanchion.

pro's and cons of this system? Does it give any advantage over the quick release system ?

Is it easy to take the wheel off with a through axel ?

I think through axles will eventually become standard on mountain bikes. The qr system as it is was adopted from road bikes. The advantages of this system have been negated by the "lawyers lip". You essentially have to screw the skewer back on anyway and fiddle round with the tension.

A through axle is meant to be more rigid and less susceptible to accidental release. A downfall of this system is that at the moment there is no standard and there are anumber of sizes being used. I think this will die down in the near future which will see its popularity grow.

This is what I mean with the Ksyrium. I'll take some photos of the equivalent Shimano cross section later today.

As promised, the comparative photo.

The Mavic rim on the right has developed a crack that runs along the inner spoke bed. This is typical of these wheels with the cracks radiating outwards from the spoke hole. If you look at the crude ferrule you'll actually notice where the crack started.

The XTR rim on the left has a similar design, but the ferrule is formed separately and externally and then welded in place.

The XTR ferrule is smooth and solid and doesn't develop and propagate cracks.

And while we also talking bout QR vs Thru-axle . Currently there are only two sizes I have seen and that is the 15 and 20mm . The 20mm does not use any sort or QR . I was very sceptical when I got told that it is much stiffed bla bla bla but I could immediatly feel the difference , the front actaully goes now where you want it to go . If you are going to be racing for 1st then stay with the QR as it still about half a minute faster to take the wheel out if need be . But if 30 seconds and 30grams are terms that your roadie friends use and means sheeet to you get the Thru-Axle .
