Jules Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 I've noticed that fees for road races are quite expensive these days. I'm looking at doing the Fast One and the Herald and they are R165 and R170 respectively. I tend to prefer road to MTB but I'm going to consider doing more MTB races if this is what we can expect to pay for all road races. I guess MTB is cheaper because you don't have to pay for traffic officers and there is slightly less bureaucracy.
dirtrider Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 But as soon as you get CSA or CGA involved in any race the fees goes up ! I have already cut down on races this year . Try not to do any CSA/CGA endorsed races , which means options are limited . But surprisingly enough there are still enough races to do .
AndreZA Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 per km I think MTB races are more expensive. What's the point of races anyway if you are not one of the 35 MTN riders.
dirtrider Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 But fortunately MR Jules also wins a lot of races !! I am sure not enough to give up his regular job yet but enough to buy a six pack every so often .
markStockton Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 This is an easy one. I don't really like road races much, I go because the rest of the family is riding. So for me it will be much, much more MTB.

I am sure not enough to give up his regular job yet but enough to buy a six pack every so often . Haha, thanks DR, but only the short distance ones. Not only do you get to answer "yes" to the "have you won a race?" threads, but the economics make a lot of sense too: race entries are cheaper, chances of prize money greater, and the races are short, furious and fun.
dfm1 Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 MTB entries might be cheaper than road entries, however the average cost per race for mtb is much higher as your equipment takes far more of a hammering than on the road so I would guess the cost per race for mtb is probably 50 - 60% higher tan the road
epoh Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Dude, all the best mountain bike races I want to do is outside of JHB so that will result in forking out for petrol, accommodation etc. All the road races I want to do is mostly in JHB!

Bought some 9spd KMC chains from Solomon's recently for R100 each. Looking around for casettes that are cheaper than R300 if anyone knows? Paying R900 for an XT casette is just silly, IMO.

Chris Willemse has them for R450 + R50 postage. I know not R300 but better then R900. and why do you complain anyway. You want to buy a R4000 vacume cleaner.
Jules Posted December 30, 2008 Author Posted December 30, 2008 That's a good price, Para. I was at Northcliff on Sunday and Alex was telling me how Shimano agents have put all their prices up so probably a good idea to buy the old stock. I can get 9spd casettes on CRC for R300 but that is before VAT and postage. As for the vacume cleaner, I said LESS than R4k. This was to avoid the recommendation of insanely expensive vacume cleaners, like Kirby, which can fetch more than R10k!
