What MTB wheels

A very good combo is the ringle Dirt Flea with the ZTR rims, probably one of the lightests combos around, but a word of caution though, if you are 90kg's + and ride a bit hard on a hard tail, be prepared to replace freebody bearings very often.

Not a big problem, the bearings are ZAR 18.00 each and it takes about 15 mins to change them. I seem to fit the above catagory and i need to change bearings at least every 700 to 900 Km.

Still a good deal - remember to go tubeless, no matter what you decide on!!!!!

ChrisH, it all depends on how much you want to spend (and you don't say whether you've got rim brakes or hydaulics).

For approx R 3k, you could go for a DT Swiss rim (4.1XC) with a Hope Pro2 hub.

For approx R 4k, you could go for a full DT Swiss wheel (240 hubs & 4.1XC rim)

For approx R6k, you could go for Chris King Hubs with DT Swiss 4.1XC rims.

Although Stans ZTR 355 rims are approx 70g lighter per rim than the DT Swiss, I prefer the DT Swiss because of their rigidity and strength.

So let me stand up for the crossmax sl's.

I've got a pair, did last years epic, still train on them, will do this years epic and it still looks brand new.

Wonder why you'll find about 60% of riders in the Epic do ride this "crap" crossmax sl's?

I'm not sure, but look around, phone the shops. They will tell you how many comebacks they get on Crossmax.... Hardly any.

Yes, the spokes are expensive, but if you look after your stuff, you don't need to worry.

I'm only a roadie, playing around in the underworld of cycling, but buy what you can afford and what you like.

At the end of the day you will buy wheels that you don't like, and sell it to buy what you want.

Popeye, I've got nothing against the Crossmax SL's (or the new SLR's), it's just that one can build an excellent quality rim (and lighter) for a lot less than the purchase price of the SL's or SLR's.

I was quoted R 9k for a set of SL's !!

R 6500 for a set of SL's.

If you PM me, I can try and get a better price. I baught a brand new set last year Feb for R5000. It was wrapped in plastic.

I remember I also phone that guy who had that shop just outside gavendish sq. and he quoted me R5 500, and I did not even knew who he was. I think his name is Justin..Can't remember.

the issue with Crossmax is that the freehub is the work of teh devil.

Two pawls may work on the road and keep weight down but an MTB needs a strong gearbox and Crossmax don;t have that.

There are far better hubs, rims and spokes available, they're just not called Mavic.

ChrisH....if you can stretch to Chris Kings, do it. They are EXPENSE but they are the last set of hubs you'll ever buy. Absolute works of art and NO ONE comes close on quality.

Have a look at ChainReactionCycles. The front ISO hub retails for R1400 and rear for R3070.

I landed a complete wheelset built by CRC with the Kings, Mavic 717 rims, DT revolution spokes and Kore skewers for R4500!!! At the time (2yrs ago) the rear hub alone was retailing for R4800 locally!

I wouldn't go for the complete wheelset from them though. TitusTi is rebuilding my wheels soon. Atmittedly, they were a bit light for my riding style, but a lot of people I've spoken too think it was a bad initial build that caused my problems (with the rims, not the hubs)
