I do software development, busy working on a sizable system - I'm the only coder. So my boss gives me spec docs which I then develop. So before the Christmas holidays he gives me a spec for a feature, and I know its gonna be moerse complicated, very tricky, calculating ratios and percentages up and down treeviews etc. Anyway, I put off doing it because I'm literally scared of the complexity. So this Monday I klap it and put my all into it, and today I finish it, works PERFECTLY according to the specs. I send my boss the new EXE and database for him to check out. Ja, he says it works. 10 minutes later, he mails me an "additional" spec that he just thought up, that COMPLETELY changes how I did this feature, I'll have to redo the whole module. I told him that this was unacceptable. You can't change the specs sommer just like that, ****, the module was completed 10 minutes ago!

Am I being unreasonable? Angry

I was in that situation A LOT!!!! Ask him what is the use of a spec if he changes it? A proper Project Manager stick tio the spec....additional changes not in the spec get's charged at a certain rate. This means people/clients go through the spec properly before signing it off...or else they pay!!

First, get your previous spec into production.  Then sit back and enjoy how people use your new marvelous creation.

Then go back to the drawing board and give your boss an estimate of how long it will take you to do the 'new' development.  Be sure to tell him how much time (i.e. money) that is costing him.

Anyway, why are you complaining?  Keeps you employed doesn't it?

Actually sounds to me like you guys need some PM discipline and a serious look at, specifically, Integrated Change Control mechanisms.

ja' date=' he is your boss. He can do what he wants, except touch you in funny places.  [/quote']

I am sure Azonic gets cramps in funny places when the boss does this smiley2.gif

Here's what you do:

Print out the new spec, walk into your bosses office, pin him down, and shove it into his mouth. Tell him that you didn't receive his last email, maybe he should send it through again. If he does it again, just repeat the procedure. He'll learn eventually.

This is why I work for myself. Sure, the boss is a ****, but at least at least I don't get fired for looking at porn LOL

Normally when I disagree with myself over my clients' projects, I call a meeting at the Bike park, the Keg or the Lollipop Lounge. Not sure if it's ever resolved anything, but I sure do feel better afterwards! Big%20smile

+/- 15th of January I'll hear whether the company sinks or floats. I worked my ass off on this thing because, ok wait, here a little background info.

When you are with company X for more than a year, you are considered senior staff. Senior staff get a month off over Christmas. So, would have gone back only on 22nd Jan because I've been there two years (like last year). 28 December my boss lets me that I now fall under the new startup company... and have to start working again on the 5th of Jan. Great hey? I already have plans to go to a 3 day MTB stage race next week which was arranged months ago. So now I have to beg for leave - which was actually my given right to take untill the 22nd. So the condition for me being able to leave is to get this module done which I bang out with time to spare. But whoops, lets change the requiremenst JUST as he finishes it. This has happened hundreds of times.

Boss says:

negatiewiteit maak my moerig

I says:

hierdie summary table was die moeilikste deel van die hele projek, om dit te gaan verander GAAN 'n nagmerrie wees

I says:

spec changes maak my moerig

Boss says:

wel ons het daaroor gepraat

Boss says:

ek sal maar 'n volledige log moet hou van nou af

Boss says:

jy raak 'n nagmerrie

I says:

Kry vir jou.
