Our rear wheel of the Tandem seized.(conclusion)

This morning on our ride in the Cradle area as we topped the climb up from the circle past the lion enclosure we heard a funny noise, something departed at great speed into the grass and the Tandem started behaving funny. We dismounted immediately and found that there was no quick release in the axle anymore. I picked up the QR nut in the road and it snapped!!!!!! We started pushing the tandem back downhill. We were parked at Kunjara close to the circle. The wheel jumped out of the dropouts and I realised that the whole axle was seized. The cone locknut on the cassette side was totally loose. I think the cones wound up and eventually seized the bearings. I do not have cone spanners here and cannot open it up.

I will take it back to Solomons on Monday and really hope we can get it fixed before next Sunday.

We met the Club 100 group as well as their Combi on the way. A BIG thanx to Terry and Ollie who gace us a lift back to Kunjara.ClapClapClapClapClapClapClap

Firstly thanx to Johan Bornman who offered to help me with the wheel. Thanx Johan!!!!!!

I phoned Solomons and they said I mjust bring the wheel in to them. I also phoned Jan Begeman at Raleigh?Probike who said that he will send me a report on what went wrong if the wheel was sent to them.

At Solomons they opened the wheel and found that the freehaub was loose. They repaired it and the wheel is OK again.

My question is how loose freehub could have passed the QC of Shimano? I will mail Stephen and ask him that.

Just a question, not smoking anybody out. How did the Shimano parts for that bike come into the country? Imported in a box by Probike and assembled wherever (if the wheels were already assembled in the box I don't know) or was the frame brought in by Probike and the wheels bought from Coolheat? There are many options but if you ask me I think the people who should be answering the quality control question are Probike...

Just a thought... Embarrassed

Sounds Scary!

How long have you had the new tandem?

Are you planning to do the Fast One?

Yes luckily it did not happen on a downhill!!!!!!!

We the Tandem since beginning December 2008. Bought new. Set up just like our other Tandem in Angola. We are doing the Fast One.

Jan Begeman at Raleigh/Probike said tha they receive the wheels fullyt assembled and built from Shimano. Not sure whether Coolheat/Shimano or Shimano factory. Will mail Steven later and ask the question.

OK, then I think they come in a box to Probike with the frame...

Big H ... should you rather not get a more durable ("tandem approved") set of wheels (QR, hubs etc.). I have seen people with Raleigh Tandem (the older version) and it appears that most of the parts are upgraded to "stronger" parts.

The wheels are Mavic 40 hole Tandem wheels and the hubs are Shimano Wide flanged Tandem hubs. I will never dare to ride on a under spec Tandem...... waaay to dangerous. By the way if you read the original post you will see that the QR (Shimano as well) snapped with the forces generated.

BigH I'm glad that you and EM survived this little incident. It could easily have been far worse than just a seized wheel.

Didn't you know that bearings also have a weight limit life expectancy?

What would happen if a back wheel seize up? Will it still turn but eventually stop or does it stop straight away?

When we stopped the whel was out of the rear dropouts. I shudder to think what would have happened at full speed, we went down the hill past the Nedbank place at 75km/h!!!!!!!!
