The Slime made me do it/How badly did I stuff up?

Hello all,

Upon getting back from a long ride after several others without cleaning my ride - I did the necessary last night.

Also decided to clean out the old toolbox, and came across a half-full bottle of Slime. Figured I haven't topped up the wheels for over a year, and decided it was time for some fresh puncture protection...

I'm on Cane Creek Zonos SS hoops, with Conti Mountain King 2.1 in front, and a Larsen Mimo at the back. Not UST specific, but have had them converted, so I'm basically riding tubeless.

[As an aside, and therefore a self-imposed hi-jack - I'm a heavy rider, who was suffering from endless punctures. I made the swap about two years back, maybe more - and nada, zip, nothing. Not a single puncture since. The bees-knees and all that Big%20smile]...

Anyhows - it appears I've added too much. Cannot give exact quantities - but both wheels now spin like the Lotto wheel. Upon slowing down, they actually turn backwards/forwards/backwards until the part of the wheel where this gloop/slime is obviously congregating, is at the bottom. Front and back.

The slime was quite old - and clearly both wheels are off balance. With the bike perched up on the stand, if I pedal and spin the back wheel, the whole bike shudders violently as it rotates... As the revolutions drop, it eventually 'calms' down...

Questions:

How badly have I stuffed up? LOL

Will the gloop/slime dissapate on my first ride with constant rolling action/heat from contact with the road/dirt?

Should I simply start out slow and observe how it feels?

Or have I added too much/old slime and nothing is going to remedy the situation?

If so - what do I do? It's going to be tricky getting the slime out without opening the tyres, right? Which is what I'd like to avoid, since seating them properly therafter could become a mission....

Any advice would be most appreciated!

Take the wheel out and bounce it on the ground as you turn in. That'll spreat it around. Otherwise just go ride it! Nothing makes sealant cover the inside of a tyre more than some XC riding. linnega2009-01-22 03:29:20

I think you have a snot ball in there which the topping up might have dislodged or formed. I would take the tyre off, clean the whole thing out and add fresh slime. A mission as you put it but this is the price you pay for puncture free riding.

Maybe it's just me, but Slime seems to work better inside a tube than inside a tire. It seems to dry out fairly quickly, and it does not seem to spread around efficiently to plug a hole as quickly as Stan's does. It will eventually seal the hole, but only after you have exercised your arm a few times.

RodTi, I agree with Dirtbreath. Clean and rub some soap on the tire bead to make it seat easier. It's a bit of effort but should not take too long.

how often should one do a top up ?

Depending on how much you ride, I would recommend checking at least once a month. If you rock the wheel and can hear the liquid inside, you are good to go, otherwise top up with a few scoops through the removable valve. I clean the inside of the rim and tire and fill with fresh sealant every three months regardless. Some people I know do this every week.

Thanks people...

I'm beginning to think I'd need to take off the tyres and start afresh.

There simply appears to be too much slime in the tyres now. The vibration when I spin/pedal the rear wheel really is hectic - and must be from something along the lines of the dreaded 'snotball'...

I will try a quick cruise around the block - and will take the wheels off and give them a good shake/massage - but failing which, the mission it is.

Which begs the question:

Any links here on the hub regarding the proper procedure to follow with putting in slime/seating the tyre/inflating etc?...

Will 2 bombs be enough?

Thanks, as always! Smile

Herewith a "snotball" I couldn't work out why I could pump my tyre to 12+bar and half the tyre would still be soft. It was also a bit bumpy when I rode....http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/3274/slimedz7.jpg

That picture's real small.

But maybe that's a good thing.

That seriously looks dodgy!!!  Wink
