Cheryl - my understanding of tokai is there are loads of trails' date=' and it would be  hard to map them all, but, has anyone tried to indicate which paths can be used, or are open to other users ?

Has anyone tried to go to the surrounding stables and tried to communicate trail usage to them ?

I know a few horse riders who often often talk about mtbikers on paths meant for horses only.

[/quote']

There are not that many single tracks in Tokai, and unfortunately they are not marked as to who can use them.

There are however clearly marked trails that state that MTB'ers are not allowed on.

and from posts on here, a fe mtbikers still use those.

JR - still need to find out why you think the riders were reckless ?

I often ride around the  Midrand (Saddlebrook, etc) area where I often see people riding horses. I always greet them and sometimes they even greet me back. I've learnt to be considerate and slow down mainly when the road is narrow or when I haven't been seen.

However, the other day I was riding downhill on a wide public dirt-road and these 2 ladies were riding their horses on the opposite direction at the bottom of the road. They moved to their side and I moved to my side. I didn't bother to slow down since they and their horses noticed me and there was plenty of room between us. Needless to say the horses got a little bit nervous when I went past but I think they even got more nervous when one of the ladies started yelling like if she had been mortally wounded. I was 100 m away and she was still screaming. She didn't say anything, she just yelled. Surely her behaviour will condition the horse to be nervous around cyclists.  I would like to know if I was at fault.

SANParks have?all the trails mapped and?are very clear which?are?open to which users. there is an EMP for mtbing for the peninsula. ?Not too sure whether the latest edition has been posted publicly. ?Also they do have a map (I think...). ?There is one at the gate on a big board.

I'm not sure of extent of education of other users.......

Thought I had mentioned it.... But .. I believe they were reckless taking clearly skittish horses down a very narrow single track where you cannot see much of the trail because it snakes around, having the potential for a serious accident or injury either to the horse rider being thrown off by a spooked horse, or me being trampled by a spooked horse. It's just not cool !!

JR, you mentioned you have been around horses. You can have the best trained horse in the world - but when they get a fright you can never be sure how they will react. They might have been calm walking down the track, but for them to see a unicycle might have spooked them.

Its a but unfair to say they were reckless.

I once had an incident where my horse and I were JRA and in the wind a seed pod dropped of the tree next to the horse. Newtonian mechanics combined with the black box principle meant the horse went and I was errrmm how do you say...left mid air for a moment, then saw stars and then asked my kingdom for a horse, cause it was a long walk back.

But this same horse was fearless in a jumping arena. So ja, you can never be sure.

But I see your point - aint cool being around frightened horses, no matter how they get frightened.
