Death wish cyclist

Makes the same difference to me as commenting on this thread does to you, you clearly need to comment on it so youre kinda hypocritical.

Yip. bustthesickness, you are hugely hypocritical. At least commenting on poor and/or irresponsible social and sporting behaviour is more constructive than you lambasting these guys on The Hub. Go and do something useful if you feel you are so morally superior Angry

Just seen a cyclist on a MTB riding from Bellville to Parow area. Keeping up the traffic behind him by riding a meter + from the curb....

No Helmet... ConfusedOuch

chopitty chop chop

GREAT! I bet you felt glad that 'in principle' you did your bit hey ;) wHooooooop!!

Just be careful of poking your nose into things though. You might think you're a hero once too often' date=' and one day you'll do this to the wrong person and get the living &%$#^% beaten out of you. Then you can tell everyone that you are in a wheelchair because of a stompie :D VERRRRY philanthropic of ya!

Oh, and yes, helmets are law, so let a cop enforce it. Don't run around doing other peoples work.

[/quote']

bustthesickness, bru, I hate to tell you this, but it is precisely this sort of attitude which is behind the rampant lawlessness which defines our society today. Nobody gives a **** about the rules any more. And we're all sposed to look the other way and say nothing and mind our own business. No man. What happened to the normative rules of society and the greater good?

Just a couple of comments on this one (for what they are worth).

The legislation that made wearing of cycling helmets compulsory was not well publisezed in my opinion.

I just happened to have been at Sportmans Warehouse in December and I saw the sign up ut the helmet display stating that it was now law. (can anyone give me an indication of when it became law. Exact date not necessary.)

Then again, for my own safety, I have mostly worn my helmet. 99.9% of the time and I enforce the rule when Teeny wanted to start riding with me. No helmet no ride.

The other comment I have is more of a question. Don't we all kinda have a moral obligation to help out those who are wrong?  If you get abuse, leave the doffy alone in future and let him battle his soncience when his son gets hurt (at best) or killed (at worst.) You can after all, only lead the horse to the water. We are not really the guardians of mankind and being helpful is different to trying to enforce the laws. That is what we have the cops for (for all the good that they do).

I am not refering to us as cylcists being the guardians of humanity, I am talking about us all as humans. Let's face it, some of us really need an attitude check and a good look at our own endeavours to obey the rules of the road in all aspects.

I for one will always take a gap at a stop street if it is safe to do so and someties at traffic lights as well, but I reitterate, if safe to do so.

Getting dead doesn't scare me as much as the pain of a crash and I have a great fear of being disabled, so safety is a huge concern for me.

One rule of thumb is if you're breaking the law, that's your indaba. If your action threatens my safety, I'm gonna get in your face.

Bustthesickness - your attitude blows - hard.  I think your view is cowardly - you are just too scared to put your arse on the line when you see someone doing the wrong thing.  It takes guts to take someone to task for behaving like an ass - you seem to not have any.

My helmet saved my live this weekend.

Wear it for yourself, if you don't want to don't, be selfish and take from your loved ones..what if you fall and get such bad brain damage that your a vegetable for the rest of your life? Great fun for you, but what about the people who care about you?

Another point, I think that if a cyclist is in a accident without a helmet, the medical aid should refuse to pay expenses. Why should they pay for your ignorance in using a helmet!

To all you ignorant and apathetic @ssholes....

If you have a death wish then go ahead with your antics in your blissfully ignorant world. We are more concerned with the young people that you are supposed to be teaching and showing the correct way of doing things.

The next time you want to tell someone to ****for enquiring about your (and the people with you) level of safety awareness, then first think about the danger you are putting them in by letting them ride without a helmet.

As for the seatbelt issue, I find great fun to tune the coppers in the metro vehicle next to me at the robot because they don't wear their seatbelt....I love the expression on their face when they realise they can't do anything to me because they know they are wrong.LOL

My helmet saved my life 14 years ago when a car pulled in front of me!

I went through the window and cut myself to ****! And I've got the scares to proove it!

I think this gives me the right to support/enforce the law and make all the ignorant non-helmet wearing road users unwelcome on our streets!

I would argue that having a light is better than wearing a helmet (if you're only going to do one of them). Better to be seen and avoided than surviving an accident because of your fancy helmet.

Sure, it's best to have both, but I see more helmeted riders without lights in the dark than the other way round - which is more sensible? Wearing a helmet is only one of a whole bunch of things we need to do to stay safe on a bike. Fixating on wearing helmets takes away from the other more sensible things you should be doing first, like being visible, anticipating traffic, learning good handling skills, etc etc. In many cases, wearing a helmet will just keep you pretty for your funeral if you neglect more important basic safety measures.

Humans have been cycling for more than 100 years but only wearing helmets for the last 20-odd. We seem to have done pretty well without them on the whole.

(I always wear my helmet, if you were wondering, except when cruising to the coffee shop on my SS. I like to hedge my bets.)

you are invisible, no matter how bright the jacket is, and how many lights you have on the bike.

it's only the last 20-odd years that motorists became so selfish ...

i woke up in ICU with a base of skull fracture a few years ago. after the ride tampered with the bike, changed something, went for a 100-metre ride to check if everything was ok. still don't know why i came off. i now wear my helmet (and tie it) even if i test the gears after a ride.

and i tie the kiddie's helmets in the bikepark when i see them cycling with it the wrong way around, or not tightened. so far, none of the moms attacked me Smile

no if i can just get that quadbike-oke in the bikepark to wear his helmet ...
