Just got a message that Jonkershoek is smoking big time and the wind is driving a bit of flame around... hope the damage aint too bad, not keen to loose any trails!

C'mon the boys in red (and yellow) - you can do it!

Jeesh.. that would suck.. When trees go trails just seem to  go to waist aswell. Like the middle section of the canary trail that is now out in the open, just sand everywere!

was just there untill I got told to leave. . .it started out small and spread very fast.started on the bottom of the mountain, if you look straight from the tea garden, spread to the top in about 10min then hopped over to the mountain on the otherside. Jonkers is not too bad just all the farms on the left of the road going up. most of stellenbosch is in smoke

Looks like Paradyskloof is also burning this morning - not sure how far around it has gotten. Saw some choppers with buckets, which suggests that the fire is far from being under control.

Was pretty bad in Stellenbosch last night.  Fire started in the JH valley and then spread rapidly (as wheelz said) driven by a 50 km/h SE wind to the mountain above Coetzenburg and than across to the Paradyskloof side (bad camera phone pic of the mountain burning above Coetzenburg last night below).  All the fynbos + trees above the Sports Science Institute destroyed (roof of building apparently also caught fire at some stage).  From a purely selfish perspective I'm glad that the reserve in JH apparently escaped major damage (which means I can go ride some ST this afternoon, maybe)

they had to evacuate the sports science centre and cancel the international hockey at the astro last night, couldn't even see never mind do anything that required breathing...

looks a tad better this morning, but a few people were worried about it getting into the houses last night...

JH seems to have escaped the flames...
