'k, so I know the rule of the roadis equally applicable to cyclist as well as motorists. (Let's ignore the taxis for the sake of this point though.)

I usually try to obey all the rules of the road with a few exceptions. I have always traines against ave speed, so slowing down slows my average. Therefore, I try to train where there are miinimal lights and stop streets.

So the rules I "ignore" are as follows: I slow down to make sure that the stop street I'm about to jump, is clear of vehicles and I wont get run down for my efforts. If there are cars, I stop and always make sure I have been seen by motorists before I go. I do this by offering for them to go first. When they decline, I know they have seen me.

Traffic lights at big intersections. Stop. Rest. See if traffic is clear and then I will go if safe to do so, even if the light is against me.

Traffic lights at smaller intersections. Slow down for long enough to see if the traffic is clear before very carefully making my way through the intersection.

Wrong, I know, but safety is my primary concern.

So, like what gives? My moral dilemma is that I know it'swrong, yet, if safe to do so, I will go through an intersection. By safe, I mean that it does not have ANY effect on motorists around me other than it being visible and there is NO risk to me of being taken off my bike.

How many of us, honestly, follow all the rules, all the time? We judge and condem far too quickly, but are we sure that our own houses are in order.

Women cyclists are far more likely to be killed by a lorry because, unlike men, they tend to obey red lights and wait at junctions in the driver?s blind spot, according to a study.

I tend to follow the same system as S2L, when i approach a intersection with a red stop light but thats quite with only a few cars but none crossing in front then i cautiosly ride over, however if there are plenty of cars i trend to stop even if there are no cars crossing in front of me.

Do like me, cross over on the pedestrian crossing.

I know it does not make things right in the motorists eyes, but at least they do not notice it as much as jumping the red light in the traffic laneBig%20smile

Motorists generally classify cyclists as pedesterians, so if you can cross on the crossing amongst the pedestrians then you will not even be noticedLOL

Love the cars that 'must' overtake on the little bends before the dam wall on emmarentia. Its not like someones going to push in ahead of them, and they always end up waiting at the next 3 traffic lights anyway.

The road is rough, badly cambered and you are doing 40kmh. The last thing you need is a car insisting on overtaking as well.

and then there's Randburg taxi drivers....
