and then they take the kit to a local LBS to sort out when it goes wrong...

tut tut tut

when do you take a bike part back for being faulty?

its all pretty basic stuff, if something's wrong out the box its the factory's fault, otherwise you smack it on a rock and it greaks, then thats your fault and you haev to buy another one.

I think the only thing I had to take back was a HR monitor that I bought locally - and I still had to pay for the shop to send it away......

well smart ass,

freehubs don't necessarily give you warning of their intention to fail within the first 200km. By then the part is usually pretty 2nd hand and perhaps till under warranty.

Of maybe a pin in a rear derailleur shifter brakes after 18months and the factory warranty is 2yrs so they give you a new shifter.

or the bearings in the ISIS BB fails after 3 weeks...

None of these are due to bashing on rocks but perhaps due to the odd assembly fault at the factory. If you buy your stuff from CRC then your warranty is with CRC, not the local agent.

Sure someparts are most likely to fail only after an altercation with something immovable but there are great many parts that can fail due to manufacturing fault and not within the first few months of use.

So just how do you calculate the full price of an import?

Is it Cost + Shipping + Vat ( if so how much) + Import Duties ( if so how much)?

Through parcelforce it works out R5968.00.(10 % winter sale)Through DHL its Just over R7000.00.Is it still better to use DHL.Shipping to SA is for free

total cost at Customs SA = Item cost in ZAR on day of booking in (exchangerate affected not what you actually paid) + Shipping (you already paid this) + VAT @14% (VAT in SA is always 14%) +handling fee (based on percentage of value ofgoods on day of arrival not day of purchase) + Import taxes (again worked out on day of arrival).

Bicycle parts do not attract Import costs currently.

Our sensor units on our Polars was faulty. I had to pay in RSA bit Totalsports reimbursed. This was only because i was in a hurry and had to fly back to Moz. Polar sent an email to Polar GB to find out whether Totalsports was an accredited agent. They hey took a while to reply. After I phoned the Polar Agenst they said there was no problem and thjey will refund. I was honest and declined. Local acredited agents or ditributors may not refuse service or warranties. If they do report them to the manufacturer. Send an email addressed to their MD ..... you normally get reaction very quick.

Konica Minolta rode with FSA last year, Carbon ones they used for some races. They are not bad but heard they are also not the best.

But not bad looking!
