On Saturday I found myself for the 2nd time on a MTB and also my 2nd race. Now I know nothing about MTB'ing!! Confused Other than that it was k@k hard!

At the start The_Thug's Sani2C partner (I think he is also on The Hub, not sure of his nick?) warned me that he was advised not to put the rubber wrap around the chain stay because apparently the carbon cannot breath and then it becomes soft and eventually start to break/disintegrate.

I do not have an opinion and I can not agree or disagree with him because I dont know.

Before I remove it I want to know what is the opinion out there from the Johan Bornman's, Christie and all the other bike fundi's?

My opinion? The guy should be an actor if he kept a straight face and told you that story. Carbon doesn't have lungs and therefore cannot respirate.

However, I do think you should remove your old tube from that chainstay and try again. Tube slapsock afficianados don't use cable ties to secure the ends but tuck it neatly into itself.

It takes a bit of practice but it is well worth it. Chicks notice it and will always approach you with some or other pick-up line. They can't resist tube slapsock afficianados. Just this morning one came up to me after noticing my tucked-in recycled tube green slapsock improvisation and said: "Your pace or mine?" I swear it is true. A week ago a similar thing happened and one came on strongly with a really risque one:"I like your geometry," she purred.

Remove it, punch some holes in it with a paper punch....... then it should be able to breathe...... inhale deeply...... exhale deeply..... no!!!!! you cannot get some of my Kentucky and no!!!!! you CANNOT get the day off!!!!!!

I took my tube off my chain stay this weekend and was shocked at what has happened to the carbon. I think it is only cosmetic but it has faded to a whitish colour. I will post a pic. It cannot be sun damage because it is only on one side and was not there before I put the tube on.

If the tube bothers you, go buy a chainstay protector at the LBS (or Sportsmans Warehouse) which fastens with Velcro. Just in case the carbon wants to start emitting, it should be able to foul up the air through that.

1. He's not on the hub

2. That's what he was told after his bike came back from a service.

He is choosing to believe it... It's a small thing so if using a neoprene chainstay could prevent however small possible damage why not use it? bored girl2009-02-15 12:58:16

First tape your chain stay with insulation tape and then wrap the tube over the tape to prevent the moisture and dirt that gets in from scuffing the chain stay

Thanks for the tip Thumbs%20Up

Damn, now I have to rewrap my chain stay with the tube as I did not tape the chain stay with insulation tape first Confused

I have tried a polish. Its a general polish, similar to the stuff they use on cars. Made no difference (pics taken after polishing). It doesnt really bother me as its always covered but seeing as this topic was started was wondering what caused it. You can see the dirt that has actually ingrained itself into the carbon.

I must add that this rubber has been on for about 9 months and I ride through the puddles not around.

Surely if the carbon needed to "breath" everyone with a painted carbon frame would have hassles. Decals stuck on the frames would also be a prolem.

could it not possibly be a chemical reaction between the rubber and the clearcoat on the frame?
