There must be some hubbers having the bikes on top of the trailer behind the car...   Advise needed on the racks you use ontop of the trailer as well as any comments on which trailers is the best out there ?   Looking to purchase one and need to think ahead longterm, including the bike storage on top. Mate has a Thule. Custom made racks on top which he puts the Thule bike racks onto. Great all purpose trailer. Can be stored in an upright position to save space. The sides drop down as well if you want.

The Thule looks interesting and practical, but still have to make up my mind about how soft it is to the eye. LOL   Venter, my folks has one and obviously it is the "name" in trailers, but interestingly my brother in law ( who has a trailer rental business ) says of all his trailers this is the worst build.   Bike rike that came with, how does it work jmaccelari ?

You should think about carting prams etc etc. around and not bikes.

There are plenty around. Next big funride you go to, look around the parking lot for one, take some measurements and photos, and have fun.

First rack is what venter sells, second is a example I came across.  What is the best patent for a bike rack of these two, or any other suggestions, meaning, taking the wheels off or not, etc etc ?

Keep in mind we still have bicycles, not this fancy powder puff carbon ones you lot own. Wink

It all comes down to your budget at the end of the day. If you can afford it then buy it. If you got a small budget then make one like rest of us armgatte. Then you got something you can be proud of too and brag about your DIY skills smiley4.gif smiley2.gif

My diy skills  LOL  My diy skills consist of delegating and organising.  Now the problem comes down to I still don't have a design and still don't know which is the best one ....

Buy a trailer. Any trailer, ask the trailer agent for advice.

Then you bolt a roof rack on top of the trailer.

The holdfast roof racks work great. Then you bolt a bicycle roof rack kit onto your roofrack.

Basically it is a little gutter for your back wheel, and a bracket that your fork slips into (remove front wheel.) Fancy brackets have quick release, less fancy brackets have bolts (bout in afrikaans.) We found this to be the cheapest by far. Ask an able handed friend to help with the DIY.

Then you also have packing space in your trailer.

Face it, your a cyclist, there will always be way too much stuff that goes along. And you can cart the pram around in your trailer...

Got the trailer, got the roofrails.  Now just need the rack that bolts onto the rails ( Please, please, not through the roof/lid of the trailer Shocked )   So you recon the best is the ones where you bolt the fork to the rack, wheel off, not like the first pic where you keep both wheels on ? As far as I know the ones that you remove the front wheel are cheaper. But the other option is more convenient though.

Just be careful if its the bolt option, put a washer between the bolt and the dropout, you don't want a bolt turning on the fork's dropout, damages the dropout. That's why I prefer QR.

We bolted the roof rails onto the trailers roof, but I have seen one where the whole roof rack disengages from the trailer's roof, just can't remember how it worked.
