Hi hubbers,

I know there has been probably 100 post up on lights, but can't find what I am looking for.

Need advice on reasonable prices and names, for a helmet light and a frontlight that attaches to the front bar that will last over 6 hours for Sani2c Non-stop

Thanks.

santa c, there is NO cheap way that will work - you literally get what you pay for, except in the higher-price range. in that you get the best if you go with brighter-lights. at teh omni 24 hour i had my sigma karma on my helmet and brighter-lights on my bars and despite being one of the slowest riders i had company most of the time on my night laps - because other riders wanted to share my bit of mobile daylight. seriously, birghter lights are worth every cent that you pay for them. if you can afford them you will never ever ever regret buying them.

Santa C, all depends on the use.

If you are only going to do 1 race for 5/6 hrs at night with them, there is no logic in going to spend R 4 - 5k.

For around R1k, you can get the following which will be more than ample for the purposes of 5/6hrs at night.

- 2 x Ryder Lunos - utilises AA's

- 1 x Black Diamond Icon headlamp - utilises AA's - http://www.bdel.com/gear/icon.php

SC - remember the One Day Sani has not single track at night, - all district road with some tar, plus you have full access to your support vehicle. So battery life is not important, neither do you need to make it look like daylight ahead. In fact going through the mist of the forrest, you probably don't want it too bright?

I used similar to the Thug's layout, but used Cateye's. These easily lasted with sufficient glow. We had issues so had to use them later to complete the race, but you should be able to complete before dark.

Santa C, i would look at a rechargeable light, something that will atleast put out 220 lumen+ (lumen in my opinion is really the only light output meausre to compare lights) for offroad use. using anything that uses normal batteries is not going to provide enough light. look at carrying a spare battery with you to get the allocated time you are looking for or turn you light off when you dont need it or ride off you partners lights. however in a technical section you are going to need a decent light to stay upright. I did Trans Baviaans 2 years back and i was grateful for having decent lights, especially in the country as there is virtually no light pollution out there.

I am will at a guess say one needs battery life to last about 8-9 hours?
