Patch kit and/or CO2 canisters and inflator

Slime in the wheels are an absolute MUST

Hydration packs are overrated except if you go 70km + a go, they add extra weight for shoulders/arms/hands to carry. Rather go with 2 water bottles at first (till you hit the first cow pooh patch, or turn your bike into a submersible in the mud LOL)

reactor_sa, don't spend money on nice-to-have's such as a shock pump just yet. If you need one then I'm sure your LBS will pump your shock for you if you ask them nicely. I'll take my one along in case you need it seeing as you're on a new bike which might need setting up.

A patch kit is good enough to start off with. I only use CO2 cannisters for my road bike as I can't pump the tyres hard enough by hand.

One spare tube is enough if you have a patch kit with you.

Try using water bottles first and then decide if you need a Camelbak.

Put Slime in the tyres as suggested by Agteros.

Shock pump - Nope. do that at home.

Not sure how far your ride is going to be so add these suggestions as needed ?

Tyre levers... unless you have really strong wrists. Wink

ICE card of some sort.

Some sort of energy powder drink to chuck in your water bottle to keep your electrolyte levels up while you ride. (USN, Muscle science, Gu) all make a version thereof.

Nip down to your LBS and buy a bandana to fit under your helmet, keeps the perspiration out of your eyes and protects your head against the sun a bit more.

Agteros is right, Hydration packs weigh more... however... Dont take a Camel Bak only if you are quite fit, us lesser mortals generally need the extra water a back pack offers. SmileThey cost R500 Plus Plus depending on model. fill it with ice cubes and some water on the morning of the ride, dont put anything else in (e.g. the energy drink mentioned above) other wise you will stuff up the inner. chuck a Gu and an energy bar in the pouch of pack as well in case you bonk.

Get some tyre liners from your LBS and put them in as well as Slime. Check that your tubes arent the type that come with slime in them already though.

Also check the tube you have as a spare actually fits your rims/ bike type. Saw that particular faux-pas happen to a cycling buddy  last weekend much to our amusement.LOL

Most importantly... Have fun... as you cycle along take time to have a swig of your drink, look around and think "sheesh but life is  tough in Africa..."Thumbs%20Up

Mace...

glock?

Naah, Mace and Glock not really necessary. Groenkloof is still reasonably safe but don't venture into Fountains alone or without Mace and Glock.
