What has happened to bearing prices? It seems they've gone sky-high. There was an increase late last year and two this year, and it's only March.

Does anyone have some insight into this industry?

Also, someone here once said they're in the business. Could that person please stand up? I need a new source of bearings.

Paid R10 (10mm) for the smaller and R20 (20mm) for the bigger type. Is that expensive?

I don't know what series those were, but 6000 series bearings are now about R80 or more. You can still get very cheap ones but they're made in India or China and best used as fishing weights.

I have nothing against those countries but I have just not yet come across a Chinese or Indian bearing brand that I can trust. In the bearing game it is a fact that the best comes from Japan, Germany and Sweden.

When a bearing replacement is a difficult and expensive issue like on a PowerTap hub that requires callibration afterwards, you don't want to pop a rubbish bearing in there. The labour far exceeds the bearing cost and re-doing the exercise every two months is not a proposition.

However, if you have a source of cheap, good bearings, please do tell.

but what about the damage it does to the hubs? I think Johann is talking about the roundness of the bearings more then then toughness.
