I broke the bolt that goes into that little round thingymabob under the seat to connect it to the seat post. When I went to the hardware store to get a replacement I found that the thread on the bolt is very thin for the diameter of the bolt (if that makes sense).

Where do I find a replacement?

You probably need to go to a bolt specialist like Topfast, unless the bolt is a non-standard imperial thread, in which case you might need to get a new seatpost. They cut those threads coarse for a reason.

Or go to a proper bolt place.

You'll ask for a high tensile cap screw with metric fine thread. You'll also want it plated nice and shiny and a fancy shape on the head. They'll tell you to go to the bike shop where you bought the seatpost.  The bolt is not the problem but the finish is. A good bolt shop will offer you a plating service that takes a few days and costs next to nothing.

JB, you know of any bolt shops in the Sandton/Hurlingham/Bryanston area?

I don't really care about finish, I just want to ride this afternoon.

Sorry, I don't.   Asking for a bolt shop in Sandton is like asking for a fine champaigne cellar in Vereeniging.

You'll have to travel...Wynberg maybe?

There used to be a very good shop on Oxford Rd in Randburg' date=' not sure if it is still there.[/quote']

Any chance you can remember what they're called?

Hog and Bruce, if you guys don't mind me chipping in here.

That shop is still there and I dont know what it is called. If you turn into Oxford from Malibongwe, it'll be on your right hand side, no more than 700 meters from the intersection. You can't really confuse it with anything else since the shops around it don't look like bolt and machine tool shops.

Before you go, see if you can figure out what the pitch of the thread is. In other words, lay it against a rule and see if it is one thread for every 0.8, or 0.5mm. That'll help you when you start phoning around.

Florida Hills is a bit far for you but I get good service from Rand Bolt Supplies. They know what they're talking about. 011 672-6229.  Once you're in Randburg and you're not sorted, you may as well go the extra 12 kms and go there.

Thanks JB!

Not going to bother phoning first, trying to explain over the phone will be useless. I'm in advertising, I don't know **** about thread pitch and stuff like that. I'll just go there with the 2 pieces and tell them to make me one of those.

Got 2 bolts that JKM had in stock, total cost of R6. Fine, they're not allen-key but I don't really care. The seat on the GT is there to protect my nuts if something goes wrong, not to sit on (which is what I did wrong in the first place).

If it doesn't hold I'll get the proper bit made up out of titanium of kryptonite or something.
