i read once in bicycling that  if the balls of your feet gets numb or sore it is because of soft soled shoes??? i am cycling with normal nike trainers and my feet are KILLING me, especially the ball part of the feet...

i only today bought cycling shoes...

will it go away now? and are the trainers the cause?

thanks

A good pair of comfortable cycling shoes should make the world of a difference! <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I recommend Specialized!

Cycling shoes isnt just more comfortable, their improve bike handling - especially on a mountain bike and you will pedal with allot more power!

Have a bike shop do a proper setup for you with your shoes on. Make sure the cleat is fixed on the right spot under your shoe for easy clip in and out!

It?s definitely worth the investment!

Donno if it'll go way, I still get hotspots under my feet if I go on Long training rides like 5hours plus. Less so during Mtb'ing cuz I stop to pedal more frequently, but with Road cycling my feet don't get much rest.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

what do you mean by "right spot on shoe" does it differ from shoe to shoe? it sits where it sits, the ball part of the shoe???

no matter what materials the shoes are made of, you can still experience numbness and/or burning. Make sure your toes have room to move before fastening and don't do them up too tight at the beginning of your ride.

I?m not an expert? I tend to spend a lot of time talking to and making good use of the dudes in the shop.  They know me by know and all my questions I hope doesn?t make me look like a complete idiot - aha ha<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

As for as I know it depends on your shoe size and your bike setup (length of you legs etc...)

It also depends on the make of the cleat. ? Shimano / Time / Crank brothers.

Normally the shoe has 2 options.. Ask the dude at the bike shop to check it for you. That 15mm made a big difference for me.

It should snot sit to close to your toes.

Have noticed the same issue when cycling in normal trainers (i.e. on the gym bikes or when using the mtb for getting around town).

As suggested above get proper cycling shoes and if the problem persists then look at adjusting the cleats so that the ball of your foot is slightly FORWARD of the pedal axle. (Slightly forward = a few mm's at a time)

During initial set up you will be told to set the cleats so that the ball of the foot is directly above the pedal axle, this is a basic starting position and not a definite rule that has to be obeyed for the rest of your cycling life.

Enjoy the new shoes....and the cleat clip in / out learning curve Wink

I find that clipless works so much better than flats especially on rough singletrack when the bike tends to buck around. Your feet stay planted to the pedals, and it makes a world of difference when standing and pedaling hard. You soon get used to the clip-in/out action, although expect a few falls along the way! All part of the fun LOL

The stiffer soles will definitely reduce your foot pain, but not remove it. Hey its hard work pedalling a bike for any extended period of time.

No way - go ride with those cleats! They are going to make your ride so much more fun! I have just introduced 2 of my friends who works with me to the amazing sport and we started them both off with cleats.  They bought the bike, the cleats and the shoes all at once. It?s much safer learning to ride a mountain bike with cleats! <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

We went for a couple of training rides in a safe neigbourhood and after 3 weeks they did their first race aver ? 4Okm at Sabaru Sabie in their cleats..  4 hours and 30min without any major falls! I am so proud of them ! They definitely do not qualify as the sporty type and both of them are quite small females.. but with gutsy attitudes and loads of daredevil spirit !

In fact it?s the girl friend with the ?takies? that had the biggest fall.

Now that you have the gear ? USE it !

A good rule or 2 to remember with clips...

Dont panic and pull up, twist the heel outwards to unclip (most cleats)

Momentum is everything, never stop pedaling untill the correct foot is unclipped.

hot spot on his foot and a fractured toe!! Therein perhaps lies the

difference!! Cometh the hour ...cometh the Aussies!!
