A customs clearing agent does your SAD500 document for you and pays the vat and duties over to customs on your behalf. We then charge you what we have paid over along with some sort of documentation fee.

Unfortunatley your kids bicycles such as that pay 20% duty so your calculation would be

R945.11x20% = R189.02 Duty

R945.11x10% = R1039.62 + R189.02 = R1228.64 x14% = R172.01 Vat

Total payable would be

R945.11 + R327.41 + R189.02 + R172.01 = R1633.55

Hey Rick and all you experienced hubbers, I think it is better just to pay that little bit more and buy from the local bicycle dealer. You guys always think you you getting ripped off. Bike shops also need to make a living and when there is something major wrong with the equipement that was bought or wheels that are shimano and not campag or shoes dont fit properly then its a bad buy. YES I agree its always nice to save a couple of bucks where you can but (Dont you want to see if you can fix this for me please, do you mind if I wait) pops up on a Saturday morning before a race then they are good enough. Use it dont use it. And no I'm not a mechanic or work in a bike shop. I just feel that we dont email mexico to have food delivered to us or china for rice.

Thanks

Basically the charges would all still be the same.

Like they mentioned today, customs can call for a formal clearance in which case we would then do the SAD500 for you and submit to customs, customs would then release it with a SARS releae notification. You take that SARS release notification to the post office and they will just give you the goods.

We would then charge you the duties and vat as we would have paid it on your behalf along with a documentation fee for doing the SAD500

I agree in principle, but what if the LBS asks you R4k for some item and you can get it from CRC for R1300+ALL legal duties and vat and come up to....lets say......R2500...? Would you not want to to save the R1500?Big%20smile I mean, I do want to support a local LBS, but sometimes I also need to do what is in my best interest. Another thing is also the differing opinions on bike parts....this shop will say Fulcrum is kark, that shop will say the Fulcrum backup is poor other shop will say that you can't go wrong with Falcrum (just an example)...just replace "Fulcrum" with your product....that's off the point....Confused

what I'm trying to get across is that we are sometimes "as consumers" phissed off at being overcharged and think that this is happening everywhere....I am sure that bike shops are not making that much of a killing, but I spend at my LBS....really, I do....but if I can save much, why not...?Confused

Proof:

Mavic Crossride Disc 2008 - CRC - R1540+14%=R1755...

Mavic Crossride Disc 2008 - Willi E in Durban Rd..R3500....or R3800...can't remeber...

Oh yes...I'm assuming a friend's order and your order will cover the R3500 for free shipping discount...Hug

Justin a case in point here is tyres. Kenda Nevegals from CRC are R300 each landed in SA at my door, VAT etc paid. They retail in Cape Town for between R490.00 and R650.00 depending on where you go to be ripped off.

There is no way I am supporting my local dealer at those margins.

Anyone who needs 26x2.1 Nevegals, I am bringing in 20 of them as we speak. R350.00 each. That's R50.00 per tyre for my effort and you won't find them cheaper anywhere in the country.

Bit of a thread hijack (but not much)Lamp

Do any of the experts (that seems to be Rock and ngala24) know how 'Ebay purchases' are treated.

I have a couple of Ebay purchases (new items) that are being sent directly here - How will these be treated - 1st Question Question

I order stuff from Ebay (both new and used) in the UK and, generally bring it back here with me when I'm travelling, but I'm not headed back to the UK in the near future - If it get the family to 'consolidate' the stuff and send as one parcel (bike spares - both new and used), who would that be treated - 2nd Question Question

Depends on how ebay send it to you, if throught he post office and low value it would work the same as a CRC order. High value they might call for SAD500 to be passed.

If airfreighted almost certainly a SAD500 would need to be passed, this also goes for courier parcels. Except the courier will charge you for passing the documents

Guys you must be careful with importing second hand goods, all second hand goods in SA require import permits.

Shocked That puts the cat amongst the pigeonsShocked

So a cheap, used cassette, bought off E-Bay (officially) needs an import permit, but an expensive one, from the likes of CRC does not - and there was me thinking that 'second-hand' would be better!Cry

I got a R600 rand Kersaw knife from ebay brand new for 100 bucks no duties no nothing! Viva ANC haha! phew I was lucky it wasn't stolen at the PO

What it boils down to is what side of the bed the guy that helps you got out of that morning. Goods under the value of R500 shouldnt require

I deal with JHB, Germiston, OR Tambo, Dbn, CPt and every one of them have a different procedure.

If you are going to but from CRC regularly i would suggest that you apply for a customs code no. I can point you the right direction for the forms
