well, holy roller, where did it all go wrong...?

maybe i just shouldn't have got on a bike this weekend. things just started to go wrong on saturday?

after a fariy successful day at the bike shop, i went out for a ride around town on the fixie. when the skies started to darken in the southeast and the wind picked up, i headed for joe's to sit out the storm. got a "panic" sms asking if i could do an urgent cycling-related piece. as i had my ibook with me, i hammered out a few lines about injuries while watching bits of the race to the sun on the telly. it was a poor topic choice?Embarrassed

when the rain stopped i headed home. i hit a big bump in the road and was airborne for a while. when my butt hit the saddle i heard a sickening crack then fell back onto the back wheel. this brought the bike to a prompt standstill. i saw then that the bottom of the seatpost clamp had sheared in half, and there was blood leaking from my shorts and shirt. as i fell the sharp end of the metal had gouged a hole near my groin and continued up to cut a 15cm-long gouge in my tummy. it wasn't deep, but was bloody sore.Ouch

then, there was sunday?

i should have given up in the parking lot. i rolled across to where punt was parked to give him my trance. in less than 150metres my front had completed deflated. paul helped me pump it hard enough to seal the tyre again. there had been a lot of arms-folded-one-foot-stamping as the group had been waiting for me. off when went, and me and dassie hit the first section of singletrack. all seemed well until the last downhill section. my back wheel started washing out. flat no 2!Cry

a quick pump and we're off again. me and paul opted out of the third section of singletrack and caught the group at the entrance to the fourth. this is one of the more technical sections but the singlespeed ate up all the bumps and rocks. all fine.Big%20smile

we regroup and hit the section down to the fence and the bridge. dassie's on my tail, but the skinny runt is easy to dropCool. about 20 metres before the fence, i hear a huge "thunk". damn, back tyres completely flat again. flat no 3!Angry

paul waits for me and pulls me up the hill and back to the group. all is fine as we all head into the last section of singletrack before you reach that sorta tarred downhill. i hit a fairly big rock which launches the rear tyre and throws the chain, and dumps me in the soft stuff.Shocked

chain back on, down the hill and through the puddle - no point going around it - and into the slippery stuff under the trees. as i was pulling up to the "cattle dip", thug and dirt-rider, among others, were already egging me on. there was a bit of discussion while everyone gathered. eventually i thought "what the hell", and rolled in. i made the mistake of getting on the brakes, but had no choice really - my bike bucks quite hectically on the rocks. i only get two pedal strokes in and hit the water?then the rock. i go flying rodeo-style into the muddy waterThumbs%20Downi don't know who - my eyes were covered in mud - but someone helps get my bike out, and another gives me a hand to escape the pitHug

we all tackle that rocky climb, but my muddy hands keep slipping on the even muddier handlebars, so i end up having to shoulder the bike up the hill. in the swooping uphill section i sit on dirt-rider's wheel, but i'm struggling to brake as my hands slip on the rounded levers. i almost clip his wheel and go wide and into the grass?next thing i know i'm on a heap onthe ground, and frigging soreDeadnow that i've had time to relive it, i reckon the chainring and not my front wheel that hit the rock. i must have been riding on the hoods at that stage, because it seems like i slid onto the toptube and got caught up in the frame. just to finish me off, the momentum of the bike swung the rear wheel round to hit me on the back of my noggin!Ouchto add insult to injury, after i got up and rethreaded the chain, cleated in and pushed off?i got about a quarter pedal stroke in before the crank and back wheel "seized". that's when i realised the spider was completely bent and sitting right against the chainstay.

paul bashed it back to the point that i could pedal, but my left side was getting too sore and i decided to call it quits for the day.

that was my Censored weekend horribilus?

Shocked Jeez holy, just reading that made my eyes water!  I think that all things considered you got off quite lightly as far as injuries go.  Maybe a week or two off the bike to give your body a chance to heal isn't such a bad thing ... and have you considered trainer wheels? LOL
