I'm curious if other owners of Raleigh's 2007 RC7000 carbon have had trouble with water getting *inside* the frame.

When I ride in wet weather, water somehow gets in, but I'm not sure how.

I'd appreciate any insight others may have.

Thanks,

Ron

Where does the water get in? I don't ride a raleigh but I have found that dirt and water sometimes runs along my seatpost and then my starts to make funny noises. I then have to take out the seatpost, clean it and whola.

Have you noticed your frame has little holes near the back of the chainstays?  It's meant to drain your bike after a very wet ride.  Hold the bike upright (with the front wheel in the air I mean!) and you will be amazed as the water drips out of the frame.  Magic!

Hard to say where it gets in. If it were the cable guide (or anywhere on the bottom-side of the frame), I'd expect it to leak out too. The most likely "openings" on the top side would be the headset.... But that seemed unlikely....

My Giant frame has the same problem. I just store it standing upright for a while after the ride or wash and, like WH says, it gushes out of the chainstay holes. I think water gets in via the shim on my seat post.

The little holes are not drains. They are there to dissipate heat buildup generated during welding. Good use for them though.LOL Removing your seatpost will get all the water out.

My guess would be some of it gets in via the bottom bracket too.  It's not quite as sealed as most people think!  Removing the water is essential if you want to prolong the life of that BB.

Water wont come in via the BB but you'd be surprised how much comes in through the seat post. Take the seatpost out and flip it and drain.

There have been numerous discussions about drilling a drainage hole in your BB. This topic is right up there with chain maintenance in terms of controversy and opinion. I have not had the balls to  drill mine.

Water in frames is very common. I'd say that 50% of the BBs I take off come out with a half cup-full of water. The water almost always come in via the seatpost.

In the bad old days when we still rode nasty steel bikes, the manufacturers of cast iron lugs used to put a huge hule in the BB shell. Some companies made this their trademark. Colnago's had clovers etc.

Nowadays BBs are seldom drilled for drainage even though they need it. In my classes I recommend students drill a 6mm hole in the BB. Usually you cannot get the hole in the left-right centre of the BB because of cable guides, but off-centre is good, just as long as it is at the lowest point on the BB. This you can only deterime if the bike is upright and standing on its own wheels.

Mark the point, turn the bike around, remove the BB, centre-punch the hole and drill away. Make sure you remove the burr.

Tiny little holes in the stays are like someone said, not drainage holes but holes required for framebuilding. If they weren't there, hot gasses inside the tube escaping, bubble the welding outwards creating a weld that looks remarkably like chicken poop.

Water inside the BB causes creaks, adds weight (this forum is turning me into a weight weenie ) and of course causes damage.
