BB Question -MTB

Would anyone know why a BB "cup" would shear off. My drive side BB "cup" has sheared straight off. I haven't hit it against a rock or anything, so I am stumped. Does anyone know what would cause this.....?

The thread on that side is a reverse, or left hand thread. Someone didn't take note of that and attempted to loosen it but instead, tightened it. When it wouldn't come loose, they used a long lever and applied more force. Eventually he realised his mistake and turned it the other way but by then the damage was already done.

You don't say when it broke off...why you tried to work on it? During a ride?

I think Johan's right. The drive side is left hand thread and the non-drive is normal. Only Italian thread BBs are normal on both drive and non-drive.

Eish, ok. Could have sworn that the drive side BB cup I replaced last week was normal and the non-drive side left-handed.

Maybe I got a unique BB.

He he.....make that a unique BB in a unique frame.

I think you're confusing your BBs with your pedals. Left pedal is left hand thread. Right pedal is right hand thread i.e. righty tighty.

But moenie worry nie . I regularly have moments of intense doubt, especially when things are really tight and the bike is really expensive.

Hehe I haven't had too much trouble getting my head around BBs and pedals.

But adjusting a rapid-rise derailler knocked me for six the first few times I did it! smiley18.gif

Those things are seriously topsy-turvy and should be banned.

maybe i missed something but an english threaded BB does have a left hand thread onone side and right hand on the other, just like pedals.

rapid rise is easy to adjust, you start with the largest sprocket. easy, very easy
