How often does a component such as a Thomson seatpost fail? Are a handful of failures reason enough to increase the engineering requirements of these components? I think you raise a valid point and underneath it all I agree with you. The guy with a seatpost colonoscopy would think otherwise, but that's just him. Eish, that was cruel, but I did have my tongue in cheek there. I made the point thought that the patent on that post claimed a fuse, which is an area that is supposed to fail safely before other things break. That didn't work. I think a fuse would work as a sacrificial point that would fail during normal fatigue during the lifespan of the post. If their was a problem in the ear of the post and a fissure developed there there would be no way that the fuse would save the ear from failure. I dont have that link open any more but there was the photo of the other sheared post. Is that how the fuse is designed to fail? While we are on the topic of failures and colonoscopies, I am trying to rack my brain for any structural failures on parts that I have had and cant think of any. Any failures have been through impact or where tightening of bolts has taken place. Nothing like this or that KCNC stem that was on here a while back.
