Cape Mail would not release my CRC order.  They insisted that I get a clearing agent to clear the goods for me.  This was another R 200.00

Have the same problem. My CRC order is sitting at Capemail at the moment. They have referred me to a clearing agent who has quoted me R295 irrespective of the value of my parcel.

Clamping down, or is this another rippoff?

technically if its under R400 and a bona fide gift you can get it free of duty once per year....unless you're the queen and have 2 birthdays.

keep in mind if your relatives buy it locally in the UK they have to pay 17.5% vat so its actually going to cost you more.....

If manufactured in Europe and it carries a duty then the supplier should indicate on the invoice that it is made in EU or supply an EUR 1 certificate to qualify for a reduced rate of duty over here. A further saving :-)

Just remember the following when ordering from overseas (taken from the UPS Customs Declaration form I had to sign today to get my CRC order cleared by customs):

"In respect of private importers, only 3 consignments, imported for non-commercial purposes with a value not exceeding ZAR20 000.00 per consignment is permitted to be imported per calendar year without the importer having to register with customs. A signed declaration to this effect is required of the importer to substantiate this claim. Should the importer exceed any one of these thresholds, the importer is compelled to make an application to the Dept. of Customs & Excise for a customs code number failing which customs reserves the right to impose a penalty for contravention of the Act and detain any current and future imports until such registration requirements are complied with."

quite right now ask yourself why brands like Assos are so expensive when they only pay 20% import duty and all the others made in the States or Asia pay 40% (well now 45%).......
