Does anyone know of a design to make your own car bike carrier?

Bike carriers are very expensive and yet quite simple! Surely there should be designs for it...

It is not that difficult to build one, take a look at the ride on bike racks and copy/improve your own design.

Palisade angle iron work great for the rack, large enough for MTB and road.

There's been a few on here in the past ... but you need to check if your insurance will cover you if your bike comes off a home-made product i.e. not SABS/similar approved....

.... and check your PM

Car or bakkie? I made one for my single cab in less than 2 hours, no damage to trunk, got it painted with Rhino lining and works like a charm

A few years ago this happened to me and i had 2 friends bikes on with mine.

The insurance refused to pay out as the trailer wasn't built with a carrier.I built one and fitted it and it lasted for ages.

So now my bike goes into the boot.

Sorry can only help with ride on. My believe is that I trust NO carrier but unfortunately I have to use one. The same principle applies here as to what you would apply if you are going to trust something/somebody with anything - Always check before and after. Before putting your bike on kick, pull, slap and shout at your carrier to make sure everything is sound. Again afterwards. No guarantees but at least some peace of mind. Don't do this if the neighbors can hear you. They'll think you're busy with the wife Ouch

I would really love to do this BUT I just forked out R 12K (I didnt have) on a bike.

What I may just do is make an upright bkie holder for inside my canopy for now till I can buy a decent one I think

Thule does make a rather nice one for that and I do not think it's that expensive. Maybe find out from your local dealer. I think it's around 1K

Hey Borriz

Any chance of sharing some pics or designs of your bike rack?

I am looking at making one for my Hilux. Mine's a double cab though, with a canopy. Would your design work on this setup?

Me 2! I have a double cab hilux with canopy. Require a rack for either a tow bar or maybe in the cab.

Pic of bike rack please!

I have a Trapezium 3 bike carrier - Free to a good home. Just needs a new towbar mounting bracket. Has the oversize boxes - ideal for MTB.

PM me for a pic
