Another factor is where you stay. If there is good mtb riding, then definitely a good way to go. Otherwise check out the clubs in your area and make up your mind from there.

 

And no, size does not make any difference as to which discipline, merely as to how fast you can do hills.

I've done quite a bit of both and quite a lot depends on where you live.  Presumably, you want to ride regularly and sometimes the simplicity of a roadbike is quite attractive cos you start riding from your door. Sometimes mtbking can require a little bit of a drive first which is a little more hassle.

 

If you are in an area where mountain biking is popular and you can get there easily like tokai or stellenbosch or any other popular MTB spots, then to me its a no-brainer - go MTB.  Also, the car-bike animosity on the road isn't getting any better.

 

At least when you come home with bruises and scratches from MTB, its probably your own fault .

I know this has been mentioned before, but I would also suggest starting with a mountain bike first as you can use it on and off the road. Once you have found where you prefer to ride (on or off road), then you can look at upgrading.

 

Chances are, you will love MTBing more ! (yeah I know, I'm not being very objective with my advice here )

I agree with Charvel, start with a MTB.   You then have the option to ride on and off-road and you are not limiting yourself to one discipline.  A MTB is also more comfortable to start with and easier on the legs.
