Hi Lori and welcome to the Hub.  This is quite a tough one as both serve their own purposes.  mtb offers more adventure, addrenalin pumping and just down right fun riding.  I guess it's more up to the individual what he / she prefers.  Then again sometimes it's nice to change to the other side of cycling once in a while.

Um, you will find that road riding offers just the same. If it doesn't, you are doing it wrong.

I would say get a MTB as you could do road and dirt, one bike is never enough so your second will be either be a road bike or another MTB.

once you get dirty....you'll never look back!

I love dirty girls! LOL

MTB all the way! It has so much more to offer. There are many different disciplines, so if one gets boring you can concentrate on a different one. Plus, fresh air is way nicer than diesel fumes. I also prefer falling off my bike to getting hit by cars.

And what is to prevent Lori doing both? If S/he wants to then stick with one, then great.

I reckon I can have my cake AND eat it.

Just buyWink more bikes. LOL

Def start with MTB, it allows you to get to learn how a bike works and how best to ride it and how best to fall off of it without the pressure and danger of taxis, potholes, stones (which believe it or not puncture a skinny tyre), other roadies who tend to be rude and unwelcoming of newbies, dogs, small children, etc.
