How well do tyre liners work and are they easy to install? I was thinking about thorns today as I want to do some riding where there might be many thorns ... don't have the cash for tubeless yet as I doubt my alex rims will support them.

 

Your Alex rims will be just fine for a tubeless conversion. And' date=' if you like most of us here balk at the cost of an "official" tubeless conversion, I suggest you search here for "ghetto tubeless". You'll be surprised how cheap it is to do your own DIY tubeless. And it's fun too. Nothing like a snot explosion to get you revved for the day.

 

I'll suggest you stay away from liners. Not only are they heavy but they greatly increase tyre rolling resistance by a factor of several hundred percent.

 

Further, on softish tyres they tend to abrade the tubes at the edges and cause their own punctures.  In my books, tyre liners are just one step above permatubes, which in turn are one step above wheelbarrow wheels.

 

Go tubeless.

Thanks Johan. This was the exact info (and advice) I was looking for. While I currently commute to work on tarred roads, the temptation is there to have a bit of fun on the trails on the way home. I'm also a heavy guy (100kg) and have got plain Kendra tyres.

 

My budget is beyond tight right now but I'm approaching with what the real cost of ownership will be for the next 6 months. I commute on my bike to save money, no to waste it.

 

But whats everybodys opinion on "township tubeless"? You fill old garden hoses with building sand. You just beat the tyre into shape depending on your requirements. LOL

Jy kan as jy wil by gewone presta tubes (sonder sealant in) die moertjie voor op die valve wat hom oop en toe maak met 'n tang oordraad draai tot hy heeltemal uit is en die lang dingetjie in die valve binnetoe val. Ek gebruik dan sommer 'n spuitnaald om die oko in te spuit. Die trick is net om weer die lang dingetjie wat in die tube l?, so te tune dat hy weer by die valve uitkom om die moertjie weer op te sit.

I must say the option of going tubeless does sound alot better esp as it means not having the weight of the liner and then losing the tube as well

I have the above rims on my bike the stickers on them say WTB SX24 aluninium alloy 17-559

 

would these be ok to use for the conversion

 

I am originally technician by trade so I am quite happy to do it myself and I would prefer to do it properly using the best kit / components

 

taking the above into account what would I need to buy to do a good conversion is it just 2 tubless tyres and a kit and if so please give me a couple of brand recomendations

 

I will be in europe next month meeting my dad from the uk as well during this trip so I could get all this stuff whilst over there if there or get it sent to my dad and collect it from him when we meet up so CRC becomes an easy option to source stuff etc
