South African tax duties on goods bought in U.K.

I have just been on the CRC site in the UK. The prices seem very low compared to the South african ones. What tax duty would i expect when the goods are delivered? why are the prces so low, compared to the shops in S.A? Do you think the site is safe and how safe is the delivery?

I heard that.........

great shop. pay only vat on everything (except for clothing, shoes, helmets, complete bikes, you get nailed for duty on those items)

get a group order together and get free shipping......

Rock' date=' do you know what the duty is on a complete bike ... i was wanting to order one.  thx [/quote']

15%

you then pay vat on top that, eg.

Bike - R1000.00

Duty = R150.00

Vat = 175.00 (effective rate of 17.5%)

My experience -

Use CRC Parcelforce option - they're very reliable, have online tracking and door-to-door delivery.

Delivery takes 5 days (sometimes longer if customs is slow)

Ask questions of CRC by email.  They're very helpful and quite quick to respond.

If you have a warrantee issue, ASK. I've had warrantee replacements and refunds from suppliers in the US and UK on the strength of an email or a phone call. Just be honest, be polite, and ask them for help.

Most other stuff (not complete bike) you'll just pay VAT + 1% for custome clearance.

I feel sorry for the South African bike shops - they are squeezed between a few distributors who have a monopoly on the local market and a buying public that is learning that international sourcing is a real + viable option but I also think where you spend your money is a personal choice.

....and I thought UK was expensive Ermm

Back when the US$ was very weak against the Pound, I knew quite a few riders who were ordering in from the US and saving quite a bit even after being hit with import duty etc. Spesh shoes, Scott frames etc. Not quite so favourable now with the current exchange rate though.

CRC are very good, though Wiggle was my preferred on-line store for most stuff. CRC seemed to specialize in MTB a bit more.

I bought a pair of Conti GP4000 clinchers a few months back in CT, and was shocked to find them more expensive than the Conti Competition tubulars I bought back in UK!

That is one of the silliest remarks I've ever seen!

South African importers are screwing consumers blind! They get away with this because not everybody is in a position to order directly from international suppliers, while others are worried about the risk.

I am a proud parrallel importer (even if I only import for myself). Sooner or later there will be enough people like me to force local importers to change their behaviour.

A mate of mine ordered a 4 bike rack (towbar mounted, galvanised, lights, cable etc) from CRC for a 1/3rd of the price of the "local" import. A tail light was broken, he emailed and complained, they sent  a complete set to SA and gave him some vouchers for future purchases.

I don't know, my small input to a volatile (sic) subject.
