I need some suggestions: The wife wants to try her hand at MTBing. Nothing serious though...just farm roads with the kids.

So, I'm looking at an entrylevel MTB with possible upgrading on components as time goes on...

I'm leaning towards a Silverback - any comments / suggestions?

Would recommended something entry level as a Giant Boulder.

My GF rode hers for 2 years with no problem except chain replacement.

Bought for R2000 and sold it for R1400. Only cost us R600 + the cost of a chain for 2 years. and then we bought her a trance2.

If you sell it you will get some good bucks back, more than silverback or ralleigh or even merida.  Most 1st time buyers have heard of giant.

How many kms on that chain?

Granted she didn't use the MTB that often. Guessing probably about 3000-4000 kms over the 2 chains. mostly gravel roads and tar. not technical stuff.

Buy something you can use as a backup when you get your bike serviced LOL that way you will never have an excuse not to ride (that is unless she becomes serious)

If you go Silverback I would say chuck in the extra 400 rand and get the Reno its a much nicer bike for the extra 400 bucks

My wife is riding one she does not do any rough stuff on it but loves the bike

I have only ridden it once for about 4km but it rides nice the V brakes work well its a real nice starting out bike and at under 3 grand is good value

The Alpine would give you more upgrading options but depends on what you want to spend
