Best hydration pack/ carrier for endurance riding?

I need to tap into the experience of the more senior MTB guys. What would be a good hydration pack/ storage bag combination be for races like Transbaviaans? I am looking at the Camelbak range, Scudo, Mule, Havoc? Are there any better suggestions?

I have bought the following packs:

1. Sportsmans Special = Rubish (Wasted R300)

2. Hydrapack = rubish(Wasted R700)

3. Camelbak = Should of bought first.

Also depends what you want to carry with you.

For the TB you don't have to carry too much as they have well spaced and stacked water points can't really comment on other races as I have only done 4 or 5 stage races again well spaced water points. Don't go fast enough to have serious mechanical problems.

If I had to buy again it would certainly not be anything but a Camelbak and not more than a 2 liter resevoir/bladder.

I originally got a Camelbak Mule, but found it too big and

bulky (I use if for commuting now - it's great for that).

I replaced it with a Hydrapak (one of the smaller ones)

and it fits my chow and spares nicely without the

bulkiness and sits nicely on my back.

I reckon this is a try it and decide for yourself type of

question...

Mule is the way to go.

By the time you have 2-3 litres water, jacket, tube, tools, bar or two, banana, phone, keys, its pretty full.

The new ones have compression straps so you can pull it all together and its not so baggy.

Camelbak Rogue - More than enough room for stuff.

Big Enough but not too big.  I'm selling one for R500 - hardly used.

I've ordered the Scudo as it was the cheapest 3L on CRC and I want something visable - its the porno orange one - as I commute to work.

My first choice would be the MULE if I had the money. Also look at the 2009 range of CB as they seem to be big improvement on the older models - but then again CRC are selling the 2008 range at really excellent prices.

i'm using a salomon raid revo 20, a 20 litre bag - any bladder fits, i use a camelback because u have one.

20 litre seems big, but there's enough room for a lot of stuff (i don't have a saddlebag), and the side pockets (on the hip belt) makes getting sunscreen or snacks out while riding really easy. a very comfortable fit, i don't even know i'm carrying something. the best bit is the bladder that's sitting on the outside, so it's very easy to refill or take out.

a bit expensive at around 800 without a bladder, but if i had to choose again, i'd do the same.
