Bought my 305 from a hubber for R2000!! Got the unit in almost new condition, hang around the Hub good deals are always around the corner.

I have both, if you do mainly MTB then the 305 is sufficient, less bulky and probably more duarable and less strain on the plastic holder, battery life is claimed as not too great but Big Ben got almost 11 hours out of mine on the Sani 2 Sea. For road the 705 doubles as a very good navigational device for a car and battery life is a lot better.

You can get them cheaply on CRC (under  R4000).

I don't understand why Garmin stuff is so expensive here. I suppose it won't come with SA maps? That doesn't matter for the 305.

I bought the 305 I used to have on eBay.

Bear in mind that the maps are pretty expensive if you buy them outright (i.e. without them coming with a unit). Also, you will get charged around 31% VAT and import duty (14% and 15% respectively).

EasyGIS.co.za offers great service and post sales backup - which is worth paying for in my opinion. I also personally dont think the cadence and speed sensor is worth paying extra for.

I have a 705 and love it.

I don't think you pay duties on Garmins, only VAT. I do still agree that it's better to buy locally.

If you take the CRC price (R4,100) and add VAT, bank charges, clearing

fees etc (~R660), then add the price of the SA streetmaps (R999), you

get to slightly more than the price from EasyGIS and only about R600 less than Cape Union's price (without Vitality discounts etc.).

The 705 is sold on CRC with "basemaps" whatever those are. Do you have to spend extra over there to get UK maps or are they included? If so why do we have to pay R999 for SA maps?

The 705 with heart rate is 3785.13 + 14% VAT + R25 clearing = R4340. Even with an extra R999 for maps that is a lot cheaper.

The 305 with heart rate is only 2752.79 and you don't need maps. Of course you will have to tack on some tires or something to get over R3175 for free shipping :)

When enquiring on the price just make sure whether it comes with the candence sensor or not. The unit without the cadence sensor is cheaper until you arrive at the shop and then realise that you still have to buy the sensor. Some shops quote the cheaper price just so that you will go to them.
