After going through Cyclist training bible again I decide to do some weight training.

Dear donner I cant walk properly today. My quads are moerse seer. Anyone else that does weight training during winter?

Or is the rule that only get stronger on the bike by training on the bike?

I definitely do the weight training thing but don't just focus on the legs - do arms through to stomach - you got to have a strong core for the bike! Normally crawl home cause my calves take the biggest knock!

You get stronger by strengthening the appropriate muscles. You increase cycling efficiency by cycling more and more.

I get stronger by running up  short hills, and doing running intervals of various distances, intensities, and recovery periods on grass (the green stuff, not they smoky ones!)

I started weight training last monday.  did 4 sets of calves.

couldnt walk for a week.  my calves are still tender when i lightly touch them with my finger.

Moral of the story is :   START SLOWLY !!!

No, I'm doing the Anatomic Adaption Phase training from the MTB training bible. Made a big difference to my ability to climb and ride technical stuff.

I thought my core was weak, then I went for a massage and the physician tells me my core is really strong you must be a cyclist...

Now I dont know what to do!! hahaha

I need to figure out why my lower back is always sore after long climbs though!

How old is the Cyclist handbook ? Worth having a look at ? Exclusive books ?

I love the book. It gives you all the tools  to develop a year plan with base and peaks and stuff. Also what excercises to do to increase whatever ability.

I think I get maximum out of my little training because of this book.

from amazon:

The Best Training Book Available, September 22, 2003

By A Customer

Having studied most of the works of Armstrong, Lemond, Hinault, Burke,

Carmichael, etc. and having used personal trainers including Kirk

Willett, the current Prime Alliance GM, I can say that this is the one

book you simply cannot do without if you want to race a bicycle.

Whether you want to train 100 hours a year as a first year racer, or

are looking to rack up a thousand hours and get your first real pro

contract, you will benefit from this text.

I

work about a 50-60 hour week and raise a family. There is no way I

could have achieved the level of cycling proficiency I have without

this text. It makes the amount of time I decide to spend training pay

dividends on race day.

This book has two potential drawbacks.

First, it is possible to get too wrapped up in the minutae of planning

each and every workout for the next six months. Friel offers literally

hundreds of possible workouts to choose from, and a system for

selecting workouts that will help you approach each ride with a

specific purpose. So long as you have some ability to read and apply

both principals and a suitable level of detail, this book can not be

beat.

My second issue is that I have worn out the binding from so much use and now need to buy a new copy.
