Shout at me if I'm wrong' date=' but from what I've learned on here....  Bikes are like cars, buy secondhand ? Ermm

I'd honestly be VERY weary of second hand MTB as the components and bikes get abused out in the dirt and you can end up having to basically rebuilding the bike by fixing components!!

Seeing you're both cyclists already I'd say if you have the finances go for mid range dual sus. Not likely you won't love it...it gives a whole new dimension to your cycling!!

Have fun shopping.

Think long term, in three years time you maybe want to be more competitive. Your name says it all.  So don?t go too cheap now.  Unfortunately it is going to cost you a few grand more. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Go for a decent fork.  Nothing lower than a Tora.

Check out the Mongoose and Silverback range.  Best specs for your money.

As WW said, watch out for second hand MTB's.

I would not buy a entry level Dual Sus.

You can pick up some nice duel sus for between 6 and 15000... My sister got a Giant Ukon FX for around 6000..... There's the Silverback Mercury 3 going for about 13500 or the Mongoose Teocali Comp going for about 14995.... there's probably alot more out there though...

I picked up a second hand bike 3.5 years ago when I first started - cost me R2000 then (so equiv would be about 4k-5k?). gave myself that time to see if it would stick, and now I am going to buy the bike that will break the bank (well my little bank anyway!) - so my 2c is look out for a good second-hand. You will soon see if it has been badly looked after - as I say - I have had my 2nd hanf bike for over 3 years, and it still goes like a bomb

I am looking at the Mongoose Canaan Comp for 13500 - nicely spec'd for its price
