Wild West Road Ride

Recommended Posts

I got 52km and 1065m of ascent!

WWRR2 should have K-Hill, Hekpoort and the Satelite station hills in them. Oh and also another hill I found a few weeks ago. Will look up the name in the map book for you.

Enjoy the trip!

OK, just returned from the reconnaissance drive :-) I  added another section in town, which yields quite a steep little incline (short 11 to 13% incline smiley4.gif)

The section of the Kromdraai road from the Lion park to the M5 (Beyers Naudee extension)  is under construction, and there is even less of a shoulder to the road than normal - one lane each direction, just-just narrow enough for one car... Don't know whether we should cut this out - it is at the end of the ride. Cutting it out will shorten the ride with 21km...

With that section included it turned out to be 91km, and 1274 meters of ascent...

If we cut the section of the road, it means that kms 60 to 85 will not be ridden, but be replaced by 6 to 10 (but in reverse)

Here goes for those who wonder about the undulations:

Firstly the grades:

The sharp spikes are both anomalies when/where the car was stationary. The surprise is the incline just after the 35km marker (On GPS while driving it showed 11-13% incline, see it shows  here as just over 8....)

now the profile:

Looks good. What about cutting the construction part out and then instead of going turning right to Mrs. Pless we go straight and turn right at the next road to go past the satelite tracking station. Go along that road a bit and then turn around. Back to the main road and then left to Mrs. Pless and to the circle. Then on to Riverstone. Just a possible suggestion to keep the distance up.

If I understand you correctly you are talking about riding on the Hekpoort road? I wouldn't recommend that with a group, the road has no shoulder and has lots of speeding cars, motor bikes and trucks.

I agree about the Cradle road though, I have also been advised that it isn't safe for groups at the moment.

If you wanted to add some more bumps and replace some of the lost distance you could turn right into Robert Broom instead of left when you come down Van Oordt then go along to the T junction with Christiaan de Wet, do a u turn and come back. Adds back 24km and some nice climbs and the roads are not too bad.

Ian, that is also a good route. Or we could do the route as Agteros made but then at the circle at Rhino & Lion park turn right. At the next circle turn right. Go past Riverstone to R114. Then up to Beyers. Left into T2. Left at the circle and back to Riverstone.

Looks more like a torture ride than a hill climbing exercise. Oxman, are you trying to help us train or kill us?

You realise we can repay the favour?

It's all good mate, hills make us stronger. (or so I'm lead to believ from what is considered to be a relianle source.

Those graphs look horrible.

Decision time. Increase crank length, change close ration gear box to one with bigger cogs (rear), or go for triple chain rings up front.

Ah, I know, turn chicken, pull out of rideand go and buy pink blouse.

I'm off to Milady's dudes, they have a pink blouse with my name on it. Later.

Agreed. this is undulating not hill climbing... nothing to be considered for the Tour de France (or Jock)... The thing with this route is that there are very few 'level' areas, mostly up or down smiley4.gif

Ox. those graphics make it look more like a torture chamber. I thought torture was outlawed sometime in the middle ages or at least several ceturies ago!!!

Hog, coming from someone as hard-core as you, they are mere bumps. For pink blouse clad ijits like me, they are the Everest of JHB. Even my car battles up Kdorp hill.

I think I am developing some kind of injury / illness / technical difficulty / any of the above / all of the above reasons why Saturday is a rest day for me.

I'll pin the hopes of the South on Trubie to make those speed bumps flat before I go anywhere near them.

"sides, I hear from Andy that my Visa application has been declined.

Slave, C'mon, you did SBR fine...just climb them your own pace, you can use me as an excuseWink

I'm trying to get Mighty Spoke and bro to join for a second lapper so we get more distance for Jock training!!!

You  planning another of those spectacular blow-outs WW?

You nominating me as your official road mechanic for this ride? You bring the notes, I'll bring the pump.

So the thing is, Trubie has a big bus that takes lotsa bikes. To try and keep this thing green, I suggest we use as few cars as possible.

I'll be going with Trubie (I think he invited me.) Maybe you can join us for some real interesting conversation and tactical discussions for how we plan to take this one on.

As for me,my tactics are to survice to the end and finish even if it is somewhere near the back.

As for the next get together, be it another WWRR or the next SBR ride. I think we should have a North vs South race.

Between you, GOv2.0 and Trubie, we might be able to win dis ting.

I'll be the official sideline sitter / time keeper. Or maybe ride in an unofficial capacity.

Rules of the race are that only those who have participated in official Souf and WWRR are elligable to enter.

Any ideas on this one. (Yeah, I know, I'm way out there. My brainalso got overheated and suffered a lack of oxygen over the weekend.

Thanks Andy, now I have to find someother daft excuse for avaoiding the pain of those speed bumps.

I'll use my immagination. Only 6 days to go. I'm sure even I can think of some cr@ppy excuse between now and then.
