Well, there's specs on page two of this forum..... or you could go to the Raleigh website and check them there.... I'm just too lazy to list them Wink..

No need to find it hard, just is the case. Raleigh have had some bad publicity of late, but in 2008 their bikes were hard to beat.

Otherwise you can find them on Pg 2 as mentioned, I did spend a lot of time typing them to prove the point.

Ok so I've decided on the Raleigh... although the Mongoose is also a great bike' date=' no arguements there... the Raleigh is slightly better speced and only R500 more than the 'goose, taken both bikes for a test ride and I must say the Raleigh's the baby for me.. [/quote'] C

Congratulations on your choice. ENJOY IT.

I know the feeling, I was very anti-Raleigh a few months back saying they are still over priced even with the huge specials available now. Plus believed they were under spec'd. Looking at them now and comparing to what is out there I see the HT's are very well spec'd and their prices are very competative - eating my words...

Well thanks to Daxiet for helping me make up my mind' date=' shot dude..[/quote']

Raleigh wins hands down on components. Do yourself a favour compare components.

Mongoose - Deore Octalink Internal BB (OLD)

Raleigh - LX External BB much better spec

Mongoose - Rockshox Monarch 2.1 (can't compete with Fox)

Raleigh - Fox Float R

Mongoose - SLX RD

Raleigh - XT RD

Mongoose - Mavix 117's Deore Hubs (entry level' date=' heavy no eyelets)

Raleigh - DT Swiss X430 Deore Hubs (decent)

Mongoose - Juicy 3 brakes (Deore equiv.)

Raleigh - LX Brakes (better)

Mongoose -  Deore FD

Raleigh - LX FD

Mongoose - Frame Alu 6061

Raleigh - Frame Alu 7005

Mongoose - Rockshox Tora 302 Air

Raleigh - Rockshox Recon Race Air with Poploc and Remote Lockout (personally believe a newer technology shock, higher on the food chain than Tora).

Don't get me wrong Mongoose make some awesome well priced bikes, but these two bikes are not in the same league. The Raleigh is the better bike here.

Might I add that this is a 2008 Raleigh compared to a 2009 Comp Goose.....that ain't right....Angry...

The 2008 Goose has a Fox Float R rear shock and 318 Tora Air fork which is super, super plush....Hayes Stroker trail brakes, Deore Hollowtech crank with external bearings, SpeedDisc with Deore hubs...+ XT RD.....DAXIET....Angry...

mano-2-mano, I'll take the Goose....for the extra 500g weight disadvantage, the freedrive system is spot-on with little bobs on climbs and super plush on bumpy terrain at the rear...Thumbs%20Up...

AND

....you get laid for riding a Goose....not considering that bit of benefit is.....well......g...Ouch...

Am upgrading from a Silverback Reno to a Mongoose Comp. Don't know anything about the Raleigh but the local bike shop has recommended the Mongoose. Only thing I am not sure about is the tyre tread which I believe is fast but it may not be good through mud especially after a coastal storm. Any comments on the tyres?

Yeah, from a review I read about the 'Goose where it got a 4.5/5 rating, the tyre tread is super fast, and awesome on dry terrain / gravel etc... but ridden in muddy or wet conditions, you'll find yourself slipping and sliding all over the place.

Yup that was how it was intended. The bikes being compared were 08 Raleigh Marathon, with a new Mongoose, no one specified Fruitloop must try locate an 08 Mongoose (if there are some new ones still running around). Hence current Mongoose is the expected default.

Someone mentioned on here that no other bike is in demand as a 2008 bike....there are quite a few 2008s around...Wink
