The following works for me:

For races: Hammer HEED (expensive hence for races only)

For short sprint rides and anyride shorter or equal to 1hour: just plain water

For longer rides:1 hour upwards: 1 x Isostar Powertabs in a large water bottle plus some plain water in my hydration pack.

They say you should train with what you race with..... wish I could Unhappy

PVM Octane is da bomb!!

BUT I've taken note of the many many "just plain ol Powerade" replies...I tend to agree - a lot of these are gimmicks with very good advertising to it...

Game, the drink not the shop, is also good. Just a pitty it stains the bottles.

Game is much better than Powerade or Energade, they arent that healthy for you. Put it this way, most performance athletes are advised not to use it. PVM is great.

What's your source for this?

My sister is a SA coach and uses the same dietitian as the one of the provincial rugby teams. They recommend against it. Been to a few dietitians myself and have told me the same thing.

I used to drink Energade so I'm quite interested in the reasoning behind this. Is there something in it's composition that has a toxic effect or is it just that it doesn't provide optimum performance compared to other drinks?

Is a distinction made between Energade and Powerade? I believe they have different compositions. Energade also claims to be associated with the Sports Science Institute of SA and Cricket SA and Rugby SA.

I agree with the Energade and Game theory, also interested to hear why Energade and Powerade aren't recommended for pro athletes.  My only problem is the taste, it is just so sweet, fine for a shortish ride, but man, after 2 hours of the sweet stuff it gets hectic.

I used Gu for quite a while, nice subtle taste.  Actually want to get Cadence, I use the recovery drink and a few people said that it is quite good, all sales people though.
