Has anybody any experience or technical cautions regarding powder coating a frame?

Would it be recommended?

Any special prep except paint stripping and buffing?

Can you powder coat alu and carbon frames?

How do you get great lustre or shine on a powder coated frame except for loads of wax?

Can you neatly exclude("tape off") sections like drop outs?

Speak to morewoodkid - I know Morewoods are powdercoated. As far as I know any reputable powdercoater should be able to do it.

Just make sure you blank off any threads with bolts, or an old BB for the BB threads, and if you want to mask off anything there's a high temp masking tape that has a more thermally stable adhesive than the normal stuff.

And no, you can't powdercoat carbon.

I was speaking to one of my colleagues who does spray painting. The dealis I want to revive my 900 year old Peejou. Colleague suggested I have it powder coated.

Apparently it is better than using spray paint. Stronger and more chips and scratch resistant. To give it a shine they can powder coat a clear coat over the colour.

When you want 1 colour and willing to have the stickers on top of that, then powdercoat. Add a bit arty farty designs or even have the stickers underneth the clear coat then you will have to have it spraypainted.

Carbon can not be powder coated as far as n know.....I think???? They use electricity to charge the frame"-" and the powder is charged "+"...... thus they stick.......  Carbon not able to conduct electricity

No it is not that hot but Google on the methodology, sure you will find it.

One thing to remember, powdercoating is a bitch to remove. If the coating eventually dulls or you want to change the theme it is virtually impossible.

If you still decide to do it rember NOT to use abrasive sandblasting. It will chow away your frame. Block ALL areas that are threaded or dependant on tolerance. BB threads and headtube comes to mind. IT IS A BEATCH TO REMOVE!!!!!!

Can you powder coat, place decal stickers and then use a clear coat from a spray can duco over that? I hope this wont "eat" or "wrinkle" the powder coated base. This would allow constant maintainance if necessary

No? Sharpen both ends of two pencils. Stick them both into a wall socket, wet your fingers and touch both pencil leads.

Anyway, when powder coating an already powder coated frame you will have to have the old powder stripped using sand blasting and that is where the problems might come in. On an alu fram sandblasting causes heat through friction which compromises the structural intgrity of the frame if th blast is placed on one spot for too long. Another problem is the bead size (powder), fine beads might not remove the old coating thus a bigger bead is needed, when using bigger beads only some of the paint coating can be removed as they tend to damage the alu itself leaving very small dents in the frame. These small dents will show up when re powder coating the frame. So in short when wanting to powder coat make shure it is a steel frame or an alu frame not having previous powder on if the alu is thin due to the sand blast process needed and if the alu is thick that the guys doing the sand blasting know what they are doing. Just for safety sake, be there when the blasting is done.
