I might be way off base here, but who donates the prize money?

If it is the local club that organises the event, then I feel the proportionate splitting of the prize money would be acceptable.

If the prize money is sponsored, you have to look at what the said sponsor is getting for his  money. Very few companies are as altruistic as we would want them to be. Prize money is a form of advertising (the bigger the prize money, the bigger the field because of the added hype around the event).

How many female cyclists are there in comparison to male riders? In all honesty, who normally buys the non-essential stuff in the house? Who do you want to attract to your product?

I don't believe that the riding distance/age/star sign has anything to do with it. I am not saying that this is the way it should be, I am saying that this is the way it is and PERHAPS this is a reason.

Most of you guys aren't thinking very fairly here. You can't expect a female to race against a male, he is naturally stronger and leaner and can therefore go faster at the same work level than a female. A female will always be working harder at the same pace as a male (considering they're both seasoned athletes).

I might actually agree it's not fair to make the females prize money equal to the guys but it's also not fair to have a R20k prize money for the guys and R2k prize money for the females over the same race. Maybe R10-15K for females and only top 5 while men get top 20 for the bigger races.

I think we need more support from sponsors as well to actually increase the amount of female riders...the same as the guys, you need to nurture them from a younger age.

But in saying this, on average females are not as competetive as guys (that testosterone thing) and a lot have been brought up that it's just not lady like to do a sport like this. You'll have to change the whole culture to get a lot more females!!

During Wimbledon some friends and I had the same debate - the consensus seemed to be that men should earn more money but, like you say, it shouldn't be astoundingly more. The debate did get heated when the actual % split was discussed LOL

Cycling and physical sport in general are poor examples though - motor racing, chess, darts etc should be one race and one prize for everyone as the physical strength advantage is eliminated.

but there are still 122 (just made that up) in both women and men's competitions. In cycling there are 15 women and 90 men. You're chances of winning a womens race is quite high.

Which is why I feel men should always get more prize money than women. My debate really is around how much more....20%, 30% 100%???

And the ladies tdf only has like 8 short stages? Can not be compared to any mens grand tour. So why should the prize money be?

Excately! I dont think any local rider can call him/herself a pro. Compared to international standarda they are mere funriders who race for money.

If you think about it you will find that racing is discriminatory.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

If you start with male/female/age group prize why not have prices for Clydesdales (equal prices for different weight categories) and riders that unfortunately did not have the right parents (genetics) and don?t forget the guy/girl having to ride a plumbers job because he can?t afford anything lighter.....LOL
