I have a Record Alu crank but I like the carbon look!

If I change to a Chorus carbon crank am I downgrading too much?

Just for looks?

and are the Record chain rings compatible?

No.

You will not downgrade.  As long as you stick with Campagnolo!  Tongue

Carbon looks better.  I also like it.

Question.

What year model Alu and Chorus cranks?

A few years back when campag started with the Record campag crank, most of the euro pros kept riding the normal alu record cranks. So obviously they preferred it over carbon. Bu I do believe the new Campag carbon cranks are much better.

Idd go for Campy Centaur carbon cranks with some higher grade BB. Might save a buck or two there.

The gurus won't agree on this one.

I can guarentee that you will not notice the difference in cranks. Get the carbon one purely for the looks.

And what about Ultra Torque? the older cranks required a BB that weigh a ton. Get new cranks Yes because they look nice AND because they are ultra torque and that obviously makes them lighter because there is no square axle.

All the campag cranks use the same bb. You cant use any other bb.

That is not true you get a Record BB and Chorus and Centaur

different specs too

I believe all 10sp Ultra-torque cranks use BB cups with the same dimensions (might even be the same cup across all the ranges).

Record and Chorus square-taper (double chainring) cranks use BBs with the same dimensions (102mm long axle). The Record BB has a carbon shell, Chorus has aluminium.

Centaur and below use a BB with a 111mm axle, so these BBs will not fit Chorus/Record and vice versa.

I believe Record/Chorus Triple BBs are 111mm and the other triples are 115mm axles.

There you go.

10sp chainring is a 10sp chainring.  Shimano, Campy, Chorus, Record.  All the same.  (any 10 sp chain will work)

Just check the the BCD of the crank matches that of the new crank.  135mm for Campy.

(In other words, a Campy chainring - 135mm BCD will not fit on a crank that had Shimano-130 bcd on and vica versa.)

Ultra torque may feel a bit stiffer when standing and hammering out of the saddle than the older square taper cranks. It will be lighter too.

No problems reported with the fact that the cranks are carbon on the internet forums I browse (unlike FSA & Stronglight carbon cranks)

Conclusion: It wont make you faster, but it will look nice.

Some advice: Carefully compare the Chorus & Centaur cranks - often not much difference except markings and price.
