manbearpig Posted July 13, 2009 Share Ok i'm one of the baddies who followed the bike in front of me and ended up doing the shortcut across the field. It seems there were a few dummies spat out after the race so I thought of doing an exercise to quantify the gain of the short cut. Finding the said place on google earth and using the measuring tools it seems that the shortcut saved 1.5km, give or take 10m or so. The road that made up the actual route was flat sand road with a 100m cut through some veld. It is perfectly reasonable to assume at that early stage of the race a fairly fit rider should be able to maintain at least 25km per hour (6.9m/sec) over that section. Some faster, some slower. Using this figure of 25km/h and some simple maths we can deduce that the nett gain would be around 3min30 sec. My finish time was 3h:02min so I'd be happy to admit a time of 3h.05min30secs. Unless I'm DQ'd of course...... Manbearpig has spoken.

nathrix Posted July 13, 2009 Share Manbear...... you said fairly fit rider.... for you drop the Avg speed down to 18km/h. Then we call it quits. If MBP drops the speed to 18km/h i then kicked his ass by a mile, him and that other kamikaze that rode with him...
