Ok, input from all the mommies out there needed please.

How soon after giving birth ( cesarean section ) can you get back into the saddle?  I presume here that you will have to take it slow and short aswell with the first cycle, or can you make the first cycle one back a major ride ?

I'm trying to book a few races for the end of the year and would want to know when my other half can join.

for some CT'ians  Tongue

Check out Gunn Rita's blog: http://www.cyclingnews.com/blogs/gunn-rita-dahle-flesja-diary

She is winning races 4 months after natural birth!

I imagine your wife's gynie will be the best person to give info in this regard. Your dear wife will of course make the final decision.

My wife hasnt been on a bike since she found out she was pregnant with our first child about 3 1/2 years ago. Now with our second child 4 months old, I dont see bikes in her near future...

Well, the gynie recons she can start excersizing after 6 weeks, but I'm looking for experienced comments on how hard you can go at it within the first two weeks after that magical 6 number?

I think as long as she's made some food and done the dishes you can let her go riding. Make sure she has her phone with her so you can call her back if a nappy needs changing.

6 weeks is the norm after Caesar but she will need to take it easy. Just ask her to listen to her body.

You dont mention if she rode during the pregnancy, I presume not, which will neccesitate some time in coming back.

Your wife may be keen to start cycling again asap after the birth now, but that could change. I'm assuming it's your first child which means you're not yet aware of the changes in priorities women can experience once they become a new mum. I wouldn't put her under any pressure to start cycling. Just let her decide when she feels ready. Enjoy the birth and first few months of your new baby - life altering in the best possible way! Cycling will always be there, this time won't.

Thanks, nope, she has not cycled during pregnancy, only jogged.  It is not the intention to start off hectic ( not the kind of cycling we do LOL ) as a matter of fact both of us had only ridden last nov, so if we do cycle in november it will be without excersize and very relaxed.  But I dont want to book a race and she can't take such long distances in the saddle.

I was fairly fit before falling pregnant, was doing fun rides up to 60kms on the mtb and did a sub 4 argus 2 months before .  I cycled up until 6 1/2 months into my pregnancy so I thought I'd be ok when I started riding again afterwards.

My first ride back was 6 weeks after having natural birth.  I did a 13km loop at Harkerville and almost DIED!  My heart rate went through the roof everytime we got to a hill.

Don't expect too much too soon.  C-Section recovery is longer than normal.  Other factors to think about is how much help will she have with the baby.  If she is alone all day and not getting any help during the nights she WILL be exhausted for the first few weeks.   If she has family members who can help look after baby during the days so she can catch up on sleep it will make a big difference.

Agree with what the others have said about priorities changing.  You want to spend as much time with a baby especially if you have to work during the day.  Its also very important though for someone who did lots of exercise before baby to continue doing it afterwards otherwise there is a good chance of depression.  Its something to do with your body being used to the endorphins (sp) produced during exercise.
