Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum and have been sniffing around for some reviews of the Raleigh RC 2000 , me and the girlfriend are looking to buy road bikes and can get these new for R4500 each, it will be used for cruising with the girlfriend so no hectic racing... what other bikes should we consider in this price range?

Well at that price range, you will probably get nothing else new. Good price I reckon. Could find a much nicer bike or 2 around on the hub second hand for about the same price.

without knocking the roadies, mountain bikes would most probably suit you better. the more upright sitting position would give a lot more confidence. slap a pair of slicks on it if you want to hit the road.

Yeah, mountain bikes will take you to nicer places.  Clap  Plus think of everything you guys can do in the bushes... riding that is... on the bikes I mean...   Wink

Had to ride a long stretch of tar on Sat to get to the good stuff - wondered again why I have a road bike in the garage.  Motorists are just not nice to cyclists - end of story!

I have a mountain bike(a bit dated) and she doesn't like the ruff stuff(biking anyway ;)  ) How's the quality of 2nd hand bikes? New mountainbikes are so damn exspensive!! Thanks for the feedback guys..

LOL

I was actually just kidding. Who am I to tell someone not to get into road cycling? I've never tried it (because it's gay) so I can't really. Wink

If you want to see if she'll like MTB, why not take a trip to the Bryanston Bike Park, hire some bikes, and ride for a day. Maybe she'll like it. Hell, I'll even show you guys around if I'm available. Groenkloof would be even better, although the rocky sections may scare her.

I think buying a used road bike will be less risky than a MTB, just be sure to inspect the drive train closely because that will cost you if it needs replacing. Also make sure you get the right sized bikes. Go visit a few bike shops to see what there is, maybe you'll even stumble upon a good special or 2.

I think Northern Farm would suit her better if she is scared of the rough stuff. If she doesnt make that then I recommend trading her in for a new model. Riding in traffic is not advised.

Pfffft! Go sniff your lycra, roadies! LOL

Lock, someone was selling KHS entry level bikes at a very good price. Other than that, go visit a few bike shops, get the make and models of the bikes you like and post them here. We'll give feedback etc. Another good starting point is the bicycling website's bike buyers guide.

I bought a Mongoose Meteore Comp as my first bike. I still have it, upgraded the fork though, but after over 2 years the bike is still solid.
