If you say so, experience always trumps theory.

Sheldon Brown was a great believer in cross-pairing across square taper standards.

I've always avoided it, myself.

If it works, awesome!

My little Alan Record, just waiting for the 25mm seat post and then she will be up for sale, too small for me - still hunting that 56cm Alan

Thanks guys, please feel free to give as much advise and criticism as I am stuck with the finish. I don't like the bar and stem combo plus the tape colour.

The wheels and tyres are hot.

Will post some pics of a couple of parts I have lying about which I will let go to a good home (at a fair price) so that I can get the cash-flow going again.

She looks great! I am still looking for a seat post for you. Going to Spain for a month from next week and will check eBay for you.

What brake set you have on the bike. I can't enlarge without loosing focus on laptop?

Anyone got a size 53/54 steel road frame with a bit of pedigree that they'd like to part with...? Preferably not a locally made frame.

I'm putting parts together for a modern retro build.

Here, finally, are pictures of my buddy's steel campagnolo bicycle. (Sorry for the looong delay, Loose Cog) He got it from a friend who got it as a prize at some competition (can't remember exactly). We'd like to help him clean it up a bit - there are little flecks of rust all over the frame, the front brake is missing and the levers are a bit battered. We'd also love some more info about the bike - year, model, etc? We think it's late 70s... Also included a pic of our early 80s 022 Ishiwata Bianchi Special. Thanks to you, Loose Cog, it has its original stem back (still haven't fitted that brake, though).

Hey Guys, I need some help!

I am doing up this Alan Carbonio and trying to keep the colour scheme to black, white, silver/alu but picking up a bit of red.

The red cable housing and the Carbona seat post seem to work. Also going to use some NOS Chorus levers out the box with the Deltas.

The Ambriosio Excellence wheels were recently built on an old Record front hub and newer Chorus rear. NOS Michellin 18c Hi-Lite Supercomp HD's - those were the days!

The old Fizik black and white saddle will do at the moment.

I need help as follows:

1. What colour bar tape? Do I go white to match the hoods or red to match the cables?

2. The ITM Millennium stem and 3t Mutant bars are a mismatch and I would ideally like to get a Mutant stem. Anyone have one lying about? I can swap for a ITM BicOne stem in need.

3. The purists are going to punish me but can I please, please keep the Super Record crank? it's got some red and matches nicely with the frame!

4. Looking for some old Look Keo carbon pedals. Anyone have some? Unfortunately very broke at the moment and would like to keep all my non toeclip/strap pedals the same.

5. Also looking for some C Record Syncro levers as I am using some 70's levers to get the 10spd cassette moving (which it does beautifully)! I have a old Super Record (black lettering) or Nuovo Record derailier to swap?

Black cable housing. Black bottle cage (carbon will work nicely with the mod crank you have going). Red bar tape. Ideally red hoods and black tape. All IMO...

Nice ride  .

Nice bike maj.

Don't know what it is, can't see any defining markings on the frame, though the dropouts suggest Italian and probably between '78 and '83.

I have a very similar looking (lug wise) '83 Battaglin, though mine has detailing on the forks, seat tubes and brake bridge, so I don't think your's is a Battaglin.

The components, other than those obviously Shimano, appear Campag Victory or Triomphe.

Some TLC and she'll be lovely.

Hi Maj. Thank you for the kind words.

I too can't identify the frame from the photos, which are good by the way. So many frame builders used Campagnolo dropouts.

Please can you turn the bike upside down and take a picture of the bottom bracket lug and let us know what the numbers and letters are. We may be able to assist. Also a few pics of the fork crown and seat lug and stays will help.

Take Brasso and clean the frame to see if you can remove the rust patches? If the pitting is too deep it would require a re-chrome. Because you live in Botswana the air is dry and it may restore nicely.

Campagnolo groupset is Victory or Triomphe. I have a very nice front and rear derailleur to replace the Shimano. The wheel hubs are Record 6spd dating lae 70's early 80's.

Ask Glenzito or Danthunders. If don't have, they can probably point you in the right direction.

Loose Cog too might have a frame, he's about the same size.

One of my kids came home from the shops today with a great surprize. He got a voucher for Exclusive Books, and he bought 1001 Bikes To Ride Before You Die. (I'm very proud of him, at least as proud as I am of the other one that bought a Guns and Roses biography.)

I'm happy to inform you all that just paging through the book, I can tell you that quite a few of the bikes posted here, are on that 1001 list, including my own half finished project. How's that for motivation to finish the build and ride it, hopefully before I die!?

Posted

Can you list all 1001, so some of us, those with less generous kids, can at least know!!!

I'll try, give me a bit of time.

Oi, it's a near impossible task. I cannot find a list online. But I'll quote some of the more common names that keep popping up here, and on the Bike Porn thread. I'll leave all the mtbikes out for now.
