I have a road bike but I want to also try out mountain biking - which is better hardtail or softtail? Im not planning on doing the Epic or anything, its just for fun on weekends really...

agree with amoryn. the full-susser is too forgiving. you learn to pick lines, roll over obstacles, etc, better with the hardtail. give it six months to a year of regular riding before making the switch.

Both have their ups and downs, personally I prefer soft tail mainly cos of the fact it's a lot more forgiving on the bumps, if you decide to go soft tail make sure it's quite a lite one, either carbon or super lite alloy, otherwise going up hills could be more of a challenge than on a hard tail Fruitloop2009-08-07 06:12:17

Remember that a Merida FLX is also considered a "soft tail" even though it does not have suspension at the back. There is a difference between softail and full or dual suspension.

Bu tI would say depends on what you're going to use it for. Pure XC racing = hard tail. Marathons and Epics = dual/full suspension.

mmmmmm...not as simple as the weight factor. full sus bikes track better on technical ascents because the suspension will keep the rear grounded more.

Why go hard tail when there is a comfortable option?

I didn't love mountain biking till I got my Giant Anthem.

If you are looking for something to 'get into' mountain biking and dont want to spend too much money, then a hard tail will be better value for money. If you can afford to spend a bit, get a nice full susser and love it from the beginning.

Bla bla bla get a dual . If you can handle a DS WTF would you want to ride a HT ? a Dual is easier to ride and that is the idea !!!!! If you want to challange yourself then get a bike with square wheels .
