End of May i was taken off the Road Bike courtesy of a speeding W@anker in a Corsa. **** You Asshole, wherever you are!

Now that i am finally healed up, and injuries are ok, its time to get a new road bike, as the last one was totalled.

So here is the drill:

My Budget is Maxes out at R19k

Min specs would be 105 groupset.

So what to buy now?

Checked the Bicyling buyers guide, spoken to my LBS, and still confused.

Are the Spez's at this level any good?

I see a 'dale at this level, as do i a pinnarello.

Not a brand slt at all, but my giant Mtb is great, and my previous raleigh road was good.

Advice please, looking forward to droping some loot for the new beast!

Probably the most important thing is the frame- spend about 3/4 of your budget on it - say 14k. Buy a second hand 105 groupset for R2500. Buy a new stem(R250), handlebar(R250), seat(R500), and wheels (R1500 for Mavic entry levels).

If you want to upgrade the groupset later, no problem, there'll be buyers for the 105 groupset out there willing to pay R2500 for it.

Lastly, make sure the bike looks nice. Coordinate the colour scheme of the seat, h/tape and frame.

For a neater cabling alternative go with Campag or SRAM.

Good luck. Post a pic please when you've got it.

Dude take your R19k and find a good used bike on this forum. There have been a number of Cervelos adn some Spaz SL2's up for grabs - I know nochain, for example, was offering a Cervelo R3 with Campag Record for the mid-to-late 20s (grands that is) and the bike was practically brand new. That's a top world class racing machine which will kick the pants off anything 105 equipped...

It seem nuts to buy a R14k frame and then to put R250 stem and bars on it when you can get a very good bike used for the price of the frame.

Look in the for sale there are a few very neat bikes for sale now.

What size are you looking for?

Forgot about pedals! Trust me on this one you want to get a really good set of pedals. Go for a lightweight set such DA7810's. Well worth the money. They are so light your pedalling is so much easier. I talk from experience had 105 pedals on which weighed like half a ton - moved to 7810's - WOW big difference in pedalling. Check out CWC website for great deals on stems, h/bars, pedals etc -much cheaper than other shops.

NEW = warranty. Used = no warranty in most cases.

Good deals for complete bikes on the hub though. In most cases you'll have to change the saddle, stem and h/bar to suit your own biomechanics though. Keep that in mind when negotiating a price on complete bikes.

To avoid that - go for a frame, fork and seatpost only deal.

Thanks for the feedback.

Size is the big snag in finding 2nd hand.

I ride a XL (56cm) Frame, finding one 2nd hand is a mission, and those 2nd hand are gernerally more expensive as they more "rare".

I shall try nonetheless, and will of course put up the mandatory pics, and incl couch if needs be

I found a 10 speed Centaur groupset with carbon cranks for 6k on the hub... Just keep an eye on the hub, I won't be surprised if you walk away with a bike worth 35k. The wheels and frame is important

train on your MTB so long and don't be impatient.

I'm sure you'll be able to find a high end carbon frame XL, DA/ Record groupo and some training wheels for R19k if you're patient

Here's how I see it:

something like a Scott CR1: R6000-R8000 in mint cond

DA/ Record: R6500-R7500 in mint cond

Training wheels: R1-R1.5k

saddle, bars, pedals etc: R2-2.5k top end stuff second hand

or

As intern said buy a complete kick ass setup for R19k

Have you had a look at the new SILVERBACK range.

If I am not mistaken a brand new Silverback Monza with 105 will set you back aprox R18k.

Pretty good deal - I think - for full carbon bike.
