I ride from work through days a week on my mtb, which is a trip of 18k's. Now the question I have is this...

Would it be good or bad to ride both to and from work? Is it too much riding? I'm really working hard at improving my riding so I don't want to go backwards here or hit some sort of plateau.

What you guys think?

36km/day. You could use the trips to do some hard training or as a recovery ride after a very hard session.

Lets get some pointers from the pro's on the hub.

i ride 30km to and from work everyday but before i ride to work i ride for 2 hours 36km a day is nothing compared to what you will do in a race so dont worry about hitting a plateau or overtraining

remember that you will get stronger and always go hard on the days your legs feel bad and really easy when your legs feel good because when your legs feel good it is the perfect time for you to let those muscles recover

no use racing flat out all the time because you will never get better

(make a day during the week that you will want to make sure that you go flat out so on every tuesday you see if you can beat your time from the previous week will add the fun/intensity level onto your daily commute)

Turtlenek, I dont understand this at all.. or are you  taking the piss? Please explain, why should I rest legs when they feel good? or do you meen that good feeling when your legs are tired after a hard rideWink

I should also point out that I can only ride on a Tues, Wed and Thurs.... this make a difference at all?

Basically I got too routes home, the 18km which is pretty flat and a second route which is shorter, only 13km but features a hill that climbs up 1 km in a kilometer.

BOs your legs need time to recover and when your legs feel good it is the best time to let them get better

most of the time people hammer it on consecutive days when the legs feel good and do more damage than needed

i am not saying be lazy and never test your legs but occasionally when your legs feel good they are just trying to recover

Turtlek that does make sense in a strange sort of way!

Also bear in mind that it's not 36k's in one go, but 18 in the morning then 18 later.

Eiger that changes it a bit

ride both ways you wont be doing anything wrong to your riding over the weekend do longer rides and durin the week do your intervals/sprints between robots/intense hills

that way you will work out a good program for yourself according to what you can do given the time you have to work with and when the bunch surges up the road at that important race you will be able to keep up without hanging on like a puppy fighting for milk with his siblings

P.S. Bos that good feeling that you get after a hard ride is your mind telling you that a beer would be better than a ride so just do the beer and forget the ride smiley2.gif

I have entered Ladysmith cheese 80 km and need to know if any special training/additional training should be done.Currently doing 4 times per week 60-90 min per ride with a 4 hour long ride on tar over weekends if not riding in a race.I coped fine with Stellenbosch challenge/die burger 42 and Knysna 50km.Any ideas?
